Tim: They put an injunction on us, and we can’t honk our horns for 10 days. Well, as soon as they did that, then the horns honked for about an hour straight.

 

Freddie Sayers: Hello. And welcome to UnHerd. I’m Freddie Sayers.

 

The Canadian trucker movement in protest at the COVID mandates started as a Canadian thing and seems to have spread worldwide. There are replica movements going on in places as far afield as Austria and Australia.

 

Well, the media is covering it kind of strangely! At times it seems very negative. And we’re told there are White supremacist elements within the protests. And other times it doesn’t seem to be covered much at all.

 

We couldn’t get there ourselves. But happily, we have Leila Mechoui there in Ottawa, in the snow, who is going to give us a bit of a tour and report on what she sees.

 

Hey, Leila, where are you exactly?

 

Leila Mechoui: So I’m standing in front of the Canadian Parliament. This is like the main gate, it’s covered with signs. So you can’t see the actual building. But I can scoot over, and here it is. That’s the Parliament. There are fewer protesters right there. They’re mostly gathered on the other side of the camera. Someone’s speaking on stage. But if you look backwards. Yeah, there we go.

 

Freddie Sayers: So what have you seen over the past week, or two? We’ve got reports of some negative, or angry behavior, or some people are saying it’s been like a big celebration – what’s been your experience of the atmosphere out there?

 

Leila Mechoui: Well, of course, everyone’s going to have a different experience. But I can say, I’ve spent many hours, at all times of the day at the protests – I’ve come at night, I’ve come in the morning, I’ve come in the afternoon – it’s always been nothing but a festive and friendly atmosphere. I have nothing but positive interactions.

 

The truckers, the protesters, are all very keen to speak to you, and talk to you about where they’re from and why they’re here, etc.

 

Freddie Sayers: What have been the key messages that you’ve heard talking to all of those truckers? What are the big ideas that they want to get across?

 

Leila Mechoui: I think the most unanimous message is that they want to see an end to the mandates. They think that they’re unfair. They think that they’re overbearing. Some of them have some mistrust with regard to the vaccines. Some of them feel like they’ve been maltreated by governments, whether at the Provincial level, or the Federal level.

 

But it is very much mostly about ending the restrictions.

 

Freddie Sayers: Would you say it’s an anti-vax protest? Are there vaccinated truckers attending, or is pretty much everyone not taking the vaccine?

 

Leila Mechoui: I would say, from my experience, many truckers are not vaccinated that are here. And so there’s a bit of a self selection in that. Those that were not vaccinated may have been forced to take a vacation, let’s say, and decided to come here during that time.

 

But there are many people that are vaccinated, especially amongst the protesters during the weekends. So when people are off work, they’ll come. And I’ll speak to people, the vast majority of whom are vaccinated, and they’re happy with the vaccine.

 

But they’re tired. And a lot of them took the vaccine, in fact, because they wanted to see an end to the restrictions.

 

Freddie Sayers: How do normal Ottowans react to this? Because I imagine it’s kind of an imposition for them in their city. Are they angry? Are they understanding? What’s been the reaction?

 

Leila Mechoui: Well, listen. Those who have been angry have been given a lot of space in the Canadian press. I live in Ottawa, I live four kilometres away from Parliament. Where I live, and I would say any neighborhood that’s outside of a three kilometre perimeter, you wouldn’t tell anything’s different! It’s quiet and normal as Ottawa is. It’s a very relatively small city. Nothing much goes on, especially not during the pandemic.

 

But yes. Those who are unhappy with the protesters for various reasons – the main grievance that they had against them was, of course, the honking – had made their voices heard. And the media has chosen to highlight these.

 

Freddie Sayers: Has the honking stopped?

 

Leila Mechoui: Yes, the honking has stopped. And in fact, the other day there was an 81 year old man who had worked for his whole life as a janitor. He was a grandfather of 11 children, just a citizen of Ottawa. He was just driving about and he honked his horn. He wasn’t a part of the protest, or the convoy. And he was arrested by the police, because he did that.

 

So the injunction against the honking is being enforced, and broadly respected.

 

Freddie Sayers: How cold is it, Leila?

 

Leila Mechoui: A lot warmer now than when the protest started. There was an extreme weather warning during the first few days of the protest, so during the weekend. Now today, it’s negative one. So it’s quite warm, actually, for a Canadian winter.

 

Freddie Sayers: How do they stay warm in their trucks?

 

Leila Mechoui: Well, they have to keep them running at all times. Yes, that’s right. They keep them stalling and that provides warmth.

 

Freddie Sayers: Shall we maybe stop and talk to some of these people?

 

Leila Mechoui: How about those people. Better rush over.

 

Hi! Can I talk to you? Ask you about your placard? What are you protesting?

Couple: The lack of debate. There’s no, … We’re fluent in French. Yeah we speak French. But we just want the possibility for people to be able to have a debate. We’re protesting the mandate and the vaccine mandate in particular.

 

Leila Mechoui: Did you initially support the truckers, or, … from the start?

 

Couple: [nodding] That’s great! All the way through.

 

We need to. There was no public debate. It’s crazy! It doesn’t make sense! The censorship.

 

Leila Mechoui: Yeah. Let me try to find someone else.

 

What are you precisely here to support? Like, what about the convoy, do you support?

 

Man: I think the overall message here is, no more mandates.

 

Leila Mechoui: No more mandates, yeah.

 

Man: I don’t care if someone’s vaccinated, go for it.

 

Leila Mechoui: Yeah.

 

Man: I think we have the freedom of thought in our country, freedom of choice, freedom of religion.

 

Leila Mechoui: Yeah.

 

Man: All those things.

 

Woman: They’ve all been taken away. And they need to be restored, because it’s not right to take people’s freedoms away.

 

Leila Mechoui: Yeah.

 

Woman: When people fought for them. People laid their lives down. So that we could have freedom, and you know, I find that people who seem to understand this. The most are the ones who come from a communist country years ago, with women that came with the Polish community who came with the truckers. And they said they left that to come here.

 

Leila Mechoui: Yeah.

 

Woman: And now it’s here.

 

Man: We know that we still live in a beautiful country, with the freedom to – I guess. The problem is that unless you’re vaccinated, the freedoms are being taken away! So, how far is that going to be taken? Maybe our leaders need to be a little bit more accountable to people that maybe they look at as lower on the totem pole.

 

Leila Mechoui: If there’s one thing about this protest, which I guess is a bit irregular, it’s that everyone here is, I would say, over 40, most people have children, many people have grandchildren. So you know, these people don’t really – they’re not here for fun.

 

Freddie Sayers: We would love to go and talk to one of the truckers. I think you’ve got someone there who we might be able to talk to – can we see his truck?

 

Leila Mechoui: So — here’s the truck!

 

Freddie Sayers: This is Tim’s truck, is it?

 

Leila Mechoui: Yes it is.

 

Freddie Sayers: Wonderful. And he’s in there, hopefully.

 

Leila Mechoui: He is.

 

Freddie Sayers: Let’s go and say:

 

“Hi!”

 

Leila Mechoui: Alright, let’s go.

 

Freddie Sayers: Hi, Tim.

 

Leila Mechoui: Hi, Tim! Yeah, you’re doing pretty good.

 

Freddie Sayers: Thanks, Leila. Let’s see if we can now set it up, so we can actually have a chat with Tim directly.

 

So Tim, tell us, are you stuck in your truck? What’s the situation? What are you doing there, and what can you see?

 

Tim: I can see everything, I’m not stuck in here. I go out and play street hockey, and I walk around and that’s, … I hang out in my truck lots, because there’s always lots of people and kids coming that want to visit. So I don’t want them to come into an empty truck. But it’s nice out now. I walk around and hang out. But I do stick kind of close to it.

 

Freddie Sayers: How long have you been there?

 

Tim: Saturday will be two weeks that I’ve been here.

 

Freddie Sayers: Where did you come from? And how long was that trip? And how long are you planning on staying?

 

Tim: Well, I came from Rosemary, Alberta. And that’s 3, 600 kilometres from here. And we left on Monday, and we arrived, basically in Ottawa, Friday night. But that’s normally – I haul cattle for a living – and that’s normally a 3 day drive cat the speed limit. But it was pretty slow going when there’s 40, or 50,000 trucks. So a lot of it was 70/80 kilometres an hour, all the way here.

 

Freddie Sayers: So what was it that made you want to join this protest? Tell us the story.

 

Tim: I was thinking about joining it, when they first started talking about it. And then I was sitting at home watching the news. And the Alberta Premier, and the Alberta Health Minister, looked us all in the face of Alberta, and admitted to us that they had fudged the numbers of over 60% of the positive COVID cases that were hospital cases. They said it was like:

 

“Well, Tim came in with a broken finger. And before we would fix his finger, we made him do a COVID test. And he miraculously turned out positive, even though we had no symptoms. And we wrote them down as a positive COVID hospital case! But it was like, there’s nothing to see here!”

 

And I looked at my wife and I said:

 

“Did they just say that, right? Did I just hear that?”

 

And she said:

 

“Yeah. They just admitted to lying about the numbers, of over 60%!”

Freddie Sayers: You’ve been they’re obviously throughout this pandemic. Were you sort of suspecting things from the beginning? Were you unhappy from the beginning? Or has this grown gradually – when did you start to feel like the response to the pandemic was not sitting right with you?

 

Tim: When I couldn’t go to support my grandkids’ hockey games. Some arenas at home aren’t too bad. Some of them you just can’t go! They won’t let you. You can’t go to restaurants anymore. If they’re being really hard about it. If you’re not vaxxed, you’re not going to Boston Pizza, or Montana’s, or, they won’t let you come in. And then say:

 

“Well, you know, that’s not right!”

 

And then there’s been some vaccine injuries and stuff that they’re not admitting to. And, we have – like a couple in my family – and it’s like:

 

“Oh, it’s from something else, you know. It’s not from that.”

 

And it’s like:

 

“Well, how do know that? When it hasn’t been tested and proven!”

 

Freddie Sayers: So you haven’t taken the vaccine yourself?

 

Tim: No, no, no! My wife was basically forced to take it so that she could go to the old folks home to deal with her mum, who’s 93. And if she wouldn’t have got it, they won’t let her in there! Well, her mum’s 93 years old, somebody needs to go in there and help her out sometimes, right?

 

Freddie Sayers: How much of it was about the vaccine for you, versus the general sense of overbearing restrictions?

 

Tim: Probably more so, overbearing restrictions. Because from the start, I said:

 

“I’m not taking it!”

 

I’m going to wait 5, 10 years to see what the effects are. And then I’ll take it, if it’s all good.”

 

But it was all the other government overreach. I’m sick of paying taxes, and I’m sick of paying for them guys to waste money! And when we’re going in debt.

 

Like, I remember when I was a little kid and the US was a trillion dollars in debt! And it was like, you couldn’t imagine that. And now, here we are, four years later. And we’re the guys that are, like, we’re over a trillion in debt now! And I mean, the US is what 20, 30 trillion in debt?

 

They just keep spending money and giving money away. And they give our news media here 600 million a year, to lie to us! They don’t show the news.

 

They go off on some side streets, and they show a couple of trucks and a couple hundred people. And that’s what they’re sending around Canada, as what’s going on here. And it’s not even close.

 

Freddie Sayers: Tell us what is actually going on then. What have you seen on the news? And what are you seeing in reality? And what’s the difference between them?

 

Tim: Well, I haven’t been watching the news, because, I just don’t anymore. But the people at home are telling me:

 

“Well they’re saying there’s 200 trucks, and 18,000 people, and they’re robbing the food bank, and they’re doing all this! And the place is a mess!”

 

And it’s like, that’s not the case. Where I’m sitting on Wellington Street, I think there’s 350 trucks. And last weekend, or the weekend we got here, the RCMP flew over and took a picture, and they estimated there’s 2.4 million people. And I was up there. And it was shoulder to shoulder like you couldn’t move! And it was pleasant.

 

People were singing ‘Oh, Canada’, and there’s kids, and families! But if you watch it on the mainstream media, it’s like we’re burning the place down, or we’re robbing the homeless! And it’s so far from the truth, it’s not even close.

 

Freddie Sayers: So what is everyone doing there? Describe the scene. So everyone’s in their truck, your stationary, you’ve parked up, you’re not moving around.

 

Tim: No, we’re parked.

 

Freddie Sayers: And is everyone getting together and protesting?

 

Tim: Oh yeah!

 

Freddie Sayers: Or is everyone just sitting in their trucks? What’s the atmosphere?

 

Tim: No, no! I mean, you can’t even call it a protest. It’s more like a Canada, Day celebration. There’s no chants, … I mean, there’s chants, like yeah:

 

“We believe that we will win.”

 

And people singing “Oh, Canada”..

 

But it doesn’t look like a protest. No one’s wrecking anything. People are out visiting. People stop by all the time. It’s kind of like a big party. But it’s not, you know what I mean?

 

Freddie Sayers: So has the city ground to a halt, then? Is any normal business taking place? Or is the city been pretty much shut down?

 

Tim: I couldn’t answer that. Because I don’t really know. I know, like Wellington Street here. There’s nobody driving down it. Like it’s blocked off. There’s an emergency lane for people to get by.

 

But there’s no rural traffic going by. Like one bank shut down here last week, because it was just too noisy. They were honking horns and stuff like that, during the day.

 

Now they put an injunction on us and we can’t honk our horns for 10 days. Well, as soon as they did that, then the horns honked for about an hour straight. The Mayor and the Chief of Police, every time they try to do something, it kind of backfires on them.

 

But there’s been no violence at all, like none.

Freddie Sayers: So, how long would you be prepared to stay there for?

 

Tim: I was prepared to stay here until all the mandates across Canada were lifted, like all of them. But now, if they actually bring in the riot police, tomorrow, or Friday. And they’re going to arrest us and seize our trucks, I can’t afford to lose my truck! It’s how I make my living.

 

Freddie Sayers: Why do you think it’s the truckers that are objecting to it? What is it about that group that has made them lead this protest?

 

Tim: I think what got them started was – I mean, I don’t run to the States anymore, I pretty much local Alberta – but the guys that do go to the States, when it’s got rolling, if they’re not vaxxed, when they come back from California, bringing a load of produce, they have to quarantine for 14 days when they get home.

 

Well, who can do on one load? So you’re going to get two loads a month! Like? You’re not going to make it. And we’re basically quarantined in our trucks anyway.

 

Freddie Sayers: So, how much of the blame do you lay at Justin Trudeau’s door? Is it his fault, do you think? Or is this a wider problem?

 

Tim: It’s not all his fault. I blame it on all the parties. Because I don’t believe that, … They’re all crooked! Like Conservative, Liberal Bloc, NDP. They’re all in it for a paycheck! That’s what I think. And they think that we work for them. It’s like, no, no! You guys work for us! Don’t forget that!

 

But they get the big high price paycheck every year. And they’ll say whatever they can to keep that paycheck. And as soon as the elections are done, then it’s like:

 

“Maybe I didn’t mean that. But thanks for voting for me anyway.”

 

And that’s across all of the parties! It’s not just Liberal.

 

Freddie Sayers: I just heard that Alberta has lifted the vaccine passports. Is that something we should be celebrating?

 

Tim: That happened yesterday. They lifted the vaccine passport. It’s a good start.

 

Freddie Sayers: Do you think that’s because of your efforts?

 

Tim: Ah, maybe, some? They’re making it out to be like it’s not. It’s like, well, they’re saying:

 

“Well, the Omicron thing is now so mild, that we’re going to start lifting them.”

 

But I think if these guys hadn’t had started this convoy, they wouldn’t have done it! Because it’s basically shut the country down. There’s 150,000 trucks in the Ottawa area, that aren’t working every day. And that’s a big effect on the economy.

 

And the thing I heard here now is that if they actually chase us out of here, we’re going to go home and park our trucks! Like they can get us out of here. But they can’t make me go to work.

 

And if they got 300,000 trucks in Canada, that are parked in their driveway that will not go to work, it’s going to cause a lot of trouble.

 

Freddie Sayers: What will make this end for you? That’s the question, I think. Let’s just say that the COVID thing does gradually fade away and the mandates are lifted, will that be over for you? Do you feel like you will be back to normal? Or do you feel this has started a new movement that is going to carry on?

 

Tim: No, I think that if the mandates are all lifted. I think that’s pretty much what everybody’s looking for. But we do have to get some people in government that are telling the truth about everything. Because as far as I can see, they spew a lot of non-truths on about what’s going on. And they got to get that handled.

 

The biggest thing for me is the mandates and, the vaccine. Like I’ll never take the vaccine now, because of all the, … [reponding to someone outside the truck] Thank you very much!

 

Sure, people come steady with Tim Hortons cards and, stickers, and kids come with Ziploc bags with little notes rolled in them, and cookies, and people bring sandwiches. And it’s pretty steady. When it’s busy on the weekends, I might as well not even close the door in my truck, because they come steady all the time.

 

And I’ve probably got 200 notes from kids that they’ve colored pictures of trucks. And it’s like:

 

“Thanks for coming! We can’t go to birthday parties, and we can’t go play hockey. And, my mom is depressed, because she had to quit her job. Because the daycares are closed!”

It’s the whole thing – it’s not right. And these little kids, and my grandkids, they’re missing, so far, two years of a normal life. But you have a kid that’s in kindergarten, grade one, grade two, they’ve been sticking a mask on their face for two years! They think that’s normal! Well that isn’t normal! Not in Canada, it ain’t normal.

 

When Pfizer tells us that they don’t want to tell us what’s in the vaccine for like 55 years. It’s like:

 

“Well, then maybe I’ll take it in 55 years, how about that! Like when you tell me what’s in it, I’ll take it. Until then you’re not sticking it in my arm. Period! I don’t care!”

 

That should be my choice. That shouldn’t be the government telling me I have to do it, or I can’t go get on a plane and go to Mexico, or Australia, for a holiday.

 

You know, I worked my whole life and it’s only been the last five years that I’m far enough ahead that I can take two weeks off in the winter, and go and lay on the beach in Cabo, Mexico. I should be there right now! Like right now, I should be in Cabo laying on the beach, because we always go in the first two weeks of February.

 

Instead, I’m going to go lay in the snow over here one of these days and send a picture home to my wife, and say:

 

“Well, it’s not quite Cabo, but, at least I’m on some kind of a holiday!”

 

Freddie Sayers: We were happy that you took the time to talk to us anyway? I’m sorry it wasn’t on a beach. But hopefully you’ll get there sometime soon.

 

Tim: Yeah! I’m really hoping I get there, next year maybe.

 

Freddie Sayers: Okay. Thank you so much, Tim.

 

Tim: Yeah, you bet. Thanks a lot. Have a good day.

 

Freddie Sayers: Well, after sitting for two weeks in that truck, I think Tim deserves a holiday. So let’s hope he gets one.

@Tree Frog So what is your solution? I think the message that the truckers are sending to the pieces of sh*t that control of this world is that there are more of us than them. Them is never going to stop, ever, and I think the actions of the truckers could very well inspire the rest of us out here to get creative and come up with more ideas on how to protest against these filthy slimeballs. I had my own personal victory this past week regarding mask requirements because I stood up to a Libtard tyrant and hurt her where it really counts, in the pocket book. It’s a rare case, but we ALL NEED TO PRACTICE NONCOMPLIANCE TO THESE TYRANTS as much as possible. We are not dealing with decent people in this situation. I don’t even like to use the word people when referring to these things. No, I’m going entering into reptilian land. What do you suggest we do? I think we the people need to target all of our local fakestream media outlets. I boycotted them years ago, and of course, they’ve taken over and now dominate Youtube.

I live in Vancouver and every Saturday there’s a protest downtown and it’s almost like a party. Everyone is upbeat and happy and the cops are relaxed and chill. It’s a very positive atmosphere. The counter protesters are outnumbered about 100-1 and those people are treated with respect as well. Zero fights, zero incidents. For the numbers of people involved, it’s been amazingly calm and peaceful. If there were incidents, for DAMN sure the media would’ve been all over them……unless it’s ANTIFA. In Winnipeg and ANTIFA member ran down 4 protesters and the media has basically ignored it. The media coverage here is literally beyond belief. I ask all my friends to not take my word for it, but come down to an event and see for themselves.

Didn’t you notice he could rattle off all the debt numbers, was up to date with all the facts. We are patient, we are trusting, but we will not tolerate being lied to. Actions speak much louder than words. The time for words is over, the time for action is now.

Thank you for covering this. As a Canadian it has been embarrassing to be a citizen with this level of authoritarianism. But it may all have driven this, which hopefully will turn the world around. It is the working class vs. the elite, and IF there is a sinister group watching, they are watching with close eyes. Resistance from the “friendliest” citizens in the world, who aren’t armed, should show those that the numbers are in our favour, and you can’t control us. Starting to be a proud Canadian, again.

Unfortunately that is not 100% true. The lawyers and judges support this initiative as well. All Canadian federal government employees must get the vaccine by law. This law was allowed to pass into the Canadian labor code in December 2021. I don’t think this has been challenged in court yet. My suspicion is most judges would throw it out.

I went to Ottawa last weekend… drove 6 hours and it was minus 25C. It was fantastic and much larger than I thought. There were so many Canadian flags it reminded me of Canada day. The city itself is open and functioning pretty well normally. Only street completely shut down is Wellington st in front of parliament. It was festive, street parties at night replete with fires and bouncey castles for the kids. If you can, drive up and have a look for yourself and support these people. BTW… anyone that does a protest when it’s around Minus 25 isnt going to be afraid of anything. Trudeau must step down… he has lost the confidence of those he supposedly governs.

As an Albertans and a Canadian, I can say that the gentleman interviewed typifies the perspective in rural Alberta. Yes, not particularly sophisticated … but honest, hard-working, family-oriented, and very proud to be a Canadian. Yet these are precisely the people that Justin Trudeau (Canada’s Zoolander of ‘inclusiveness’ and every imaginable woke cause) has demonized as racists, as misogynists, as Nazi’s … and Canada’s left-leaning (and directly federal-gov’t subsidized) media parrots the same skewed message. In Australia our state funded ABC used to be the best but the Howard government changed the laws so the Murdoch press could own almost all the printing press and more. Good on you, Freddie. You couldn’t have found a more genuine example of a Canadian than Tim the trucker, from Rosemary, Alberta. The guy drove across Canada burning fuel at his expense and is parked in downtown Ottawa, not making a penny of income. All he wants is to have the mandates lifted and to allow people to have the choice of whether or not to be vaccinated. No ulterior motive, no Swastikas or Confederate flags; just a working guy with dirt under his nails. Meanwhile the politicians continue to feign concern for the “unwashed.” And the Laptop Class never misses a day’s pay. And I like his suggestion that if they’re going to bring the riot police to bust some heads and seize vehicles then the drivers will just park their rigs in their driveways. Who can listen to the trucker and honestly say that he’s unreasonable? Perfect healthy Canadians without a criminal record are barred from flying internationally * or domestically *, because why? I love your channel. I’m very glad you covered this. I’m Canadian and in my province you can’t even go in a clothing store or hardware store if you aren’t vaccinated. I had to get vaxxed to keep my job but my boyfriend and brother aren’t. It’s winter and they can’t go buy a new coat or boots or fix a leaky roof or window. These mandates must stop. 90% are vaccinated; it should be enough. This convoy situation has shown us how mainstream media lies, distort and modifies the trurth in Canada. And our Prime Minister continues to push people to HATE the unvaxxed. This is a very horrible. i’m looking into moving somewhere else at this point.

I’m Cdn. and the other aspect of this that gets little coverage with mainstream news is that due to Canada requiring a VP to enter and the US making a reciprocal requirement, unvaccinated Canadians are basically now prisoners (so to speak) here. This is because unless you have a Vaccine Passport, you cannot get on a plane (national or international), train, bus or ship to leave the country….unless you’re wealthy, have your own private jet or can hire one to take you to a country where the VP isn’t required. As a result of this another note so widely known fact is that these “rules” have made it unconstitutional under the Cdn. Charter of Rights and Freedoms and a lawsuit against the Federal Gov. has recently been filed. I’m vaccinated but find the treatment of the unvaccinated by our politicians and others to be extremely disturbing. I believe Justin Trudeau referred to them as being similar to racists and misogynists as just a couple of examples!

I’m Canadian and I can honestly say I’ve never seen anything like this in our country. People are pissed off. Many got vaccinated (like myself) and restrictions remained. We were locked down after being told it wouldn’t happen again post-vaccination. The Quebec government ordered people to stay in their homes after 10pm or else they’d be fined. A lot of horrible abuses of government power have taken place in Canada. I truly hope some of the politicians and officials responsible come up on charges of human rights abuse. Thank you for covering this. I was there for the first day (in the frigid cold), it was completely peaceful and respectful. As an unvaccinated Quebecoise (in excellent health as I am an athlete), I can no longer go anywhere or do anything. Cannot take my dog to the vet, no shopping no outings no nothing. The worst are the headlines like “What should we do about The Unvaccinated? How long can we tolerate The Unvaccinated? “Claiming we are stupid selfish people who want the freedom to harm others, or are overunning the hospitals. The vibe is, frankly, terrifying. As much as I support all these protests and demonstrations globally, I wish all these people would have understood the exact same, and stood up against this happening towards melanated people globally, the past 600+ years of european domination, oppression, colonialism, exploitation and racism. We need to listen to the concerns of all Canadians and respect each other’s feelings and opinions. Unfortunately our politicians have not done enough of that, but instead have politicized the pandemic and too many have been partisan and self serving in their actions and messaging. Of course this has further fuelled frustration and anger in a population already suffering so much. I personally do not agree with the actions of the “truckers” (there are not only truckers involved.) though I respect every citizen’s right to protest. I think it would have been only fair to interview some truckers (most are vaccinated and working btw) and others who have different views
and experiences to Tim’s, no? Does this have to be so polarized? For a more moderate; thoughtful and reasoned view from a Liberal no less (I’m not a Liberal) listen to Liberal MP Joel Lightbound’s press conference in which he raises his concerns with how his party has been handling the pandemic. He has been applauded from across the political spectrum for showing some badly needed compassion and thoughtfulness on these issues. Not surprisingly his comments have been subject to appropriation so it’s important to go to the source. The full press conference can be found on CPAC (Cable Public Affairs Channel).

I live in Ottawa and I have a much different opinion on the trucker occupation than your interviewer. While the majority of the truckers are reasonable there is an extremist fringe that the organizers could not control. They parked dozens of trucks not just on empty government streets but on local residential streets, blocked driveways, and started honking horns all night. The families living there could not sleep, and the police did nothing about it. I heard it was so bad that some people had to move out temporarily to hotels and friends to be able to sleep. Your interviewer says she lives three kilometers away and heard no honking, but I live about ten kilometers away from downtown and heard the truckers in the morning through my closed window. To their credit the demonstration organizers did try to stop the honking at night, but they could not. Only about a week later when a local resident, not the city of Ottawa, convinced a judge to grant an injunction against the all-night noise did it stop.
The truckers also harassed workers at a downtown homeless shelter, dozens of them forced their way into a local plaza without masks leading to the closure of the plaza, the 911 system in Ottawa was flooded with many bogus calls (probably by US supporters), and finally they blocked traffic for a few hours at the local airport. Each of these claims are not just publicity statements as this interviewer claimed, they are verifiable facts that people are willing to swear to under oath in a court of law. The truckers’ actions in Ottawa are mostly for the world-wide publicity they gain for their cause. The real economic damage is being done at the closed border crossings.
Most people in Canada do not care if the vaccine mandates are not enforced on the remaining ten percent unvaccinated, like the truckers. But even in Alberta which has lifted almost all restrictions, the truckers will not stop their border blockade in that province. The truckers say they will leave Ottawa only when all Covid restrictions in all of Canada are lifted. However, most such restrictions are provincial, not federal (Ottawa) and what they do here has no influence on the provinces outside of western Canada. They have structured their demands knowing that they will not be met.
The incompetence of the Ottawa police chief led to this situation. In no other Canadian city did the police allow hundreds of trucks into their downtown core, and in no other city did a trucker demonstration turn into a multi-week occupation. The truckers are slowly spinning out of control, and when our vacillating police force or the army finally take action a horde of international web sites like yours will cry foul without really having any idea of why this is happening.
Yes, many people in Canada are frustrated by Covid restrictions and all level of governments should present a clear plan on removing their Covid restrictions. But there are some special things about Canadian law enforcement that make such actions as the trucker occupations easier. The primary goal of all the police forces in Canada is not to enforce the law. Instead, it is about enforcing the law only if this does not lead to a violent confrontation with people who are demonstrating for a cause. The police bend over backwards to avoid any violent confrontation with demonstrators of more than a few dozen people. It was the same situation in the native inspired blockades a few years ago. In Ottawa the police are especially tolerant because of the many demonstrations that take place in the capital.
Yes, Trudeau has made this situation worse by refusing to meet with the truckers, when by contrast he did meet with the natives when they made similar blockades a few years ago. Yesterday the leader of the Conservative opposition who has supported the truckers in the past said for the first time that they should leave Ottawa. When their friends say this then the truckers should listen.

Dr Steve James: The minority of people in the UK, adults who haven’t had the vaccine, please let’s give them some credit. They’ve thought about it.

 

Freddie Sayers: Hello! Happy New Year. And welcome to UnHerd. I’m Freddie Sayers. This week, we’re following up on something that happened in a London hospital a few days ago.

 

The Health Secretary, Sajid Javid, was visiting and asked the group of NHS staff who were gathered to meet him what they thought of the forthcoming vaccine mandate for NHS staff. It’s due to come in April. And it will mean that medical practitioners who are not vaccinated against Covid will not be able to work in the NHS, period.

 

One doctor, Steve James, a consultant anaesthetist at King’s College Hospital, gave an answer that the Minister was not expecting.

 

Let’s have a look at the clip.

Sajid Javid: What do you think of the new rule to require vaccination for all NHS staff?

Dr Steve James: I’m not happy with that.

Sajid Javid: You’re not happy with that?

Dr Steve James: So I’ve had Covid at some point.

Sajid Javid: Yes.

Dr Steve James: I’ve got antibodies.

Sajid Javid: Yeah.

Dr Steve James: I’ve been working on Covid ICU since the beginning. I have not had a vaccination. I did not want to have a vaccination. The vaccines reduces transmission only for eight weeks for Delta. With Omicron, it’s probably less. And for that, I would be dismissed if I don’t have a vaccine? The science isn’t strong enough.

Sajid Javid: That’s your view. And your views? Do you have any view on that?

 

Freddie Sayers: So that doctor, Dr. Steve James, is here with us in the studio. Hi, Steve!

 

Dr Steve James: Hi, Freddie.

 

Freddie Sayers: So the purpose of getting you in, and thanks for coming, is to try and really just understand exactly what your position is.

So are you an anti-vaxxer?

 

Dr Steve James: No.

 

Freddie Sayers: What does that mean? That means you recognise the importance of vaccinations in other contexts, or in this context, specifically?

 

Dr Steve James: You know, to be a doctor and be against a certain group of pharmaceuticals would be a bit strange. It would be like being against surgery, or being against hospitals. Vaccines have done a lot of benefit for a lot of people around the world.

 

First of all, the term “anti-vaxxer”, is used in a purely derogatory way. Why shouldn’t someone be anti-vaccine if they don’t want to have a vaccine? I don’t have a problem with someone not liking something else, or thinking something else is wrong. I am not a flat earther. But I don’t mind if people want to say the world is flat.

 

Freddie Sayers: So, in the context of Covid. What is your view about the vaccines then? Because Sajid Javid, the Health Secretary, wrote in a piece in the Mail on Sunday, that just before the clip we’ve just seen, you told him that 70% of people in your ICU were unvaccinated, Covid patients. Is that true? Did you tell him that?

 

Dr Steve James: Yes, that’s right. That’s true. And the number of patients who are in the ICU is about a 10th of what it was at the peak of the pandemic. The majority of patients who we see now, so about 70% of the patients who come in are unvaccinated. Most of them are also elderly, with risk factors. But of the 30% who are vaccinated and come in, they’ve often got reasons why their bodies didn’t mount a good antibody response.

 

Freddie Sayers: Right. Because this is quite an important distinction already, isn’t it? Because there are a lot of people out there who feel that the Covid vaccines haven’t actually been very effective. But you’re not part of that group. You think that the vaccines have done something quite important?

 

Dr Steve James: Undoubtedly! Undoubtedly, the vaccines have made a significant difference. We’ve changed the way we look after patients, because we understand the disease process better. We have got other treatments that are available for patients who’ve got Covid.

 

But the numbers who come through the door in the first place is so much different. That, I don’t think we can account for by a bit of extra mask wearing. And a few more lockdowns. Because there have been lockdowns and not so the vaccines are the factor of change there.

 

Freddie Sayers: So is your view, then, that the vaccines are important for people who are vulnerable to serious disease, to be encouraged to take. But if you’re not vulnerable, that’s not important? What’s your position on who should be offered it and who should be encouraged to take it?

 

Dr Steve James: Well, I’d probably offer it to all adults, if I was in charge. The scale of risk and benefit changes, as you move through the age ranges, and across risk profiles within those age ranges. If you want to give one message, you have a limited ability to decide those things. So as you give that message, you think:

 

“What will induce people to take up the vaccine and bring the overall best benefit?”

 

I understand that approach. And we’ve achieved a pretty high level of vaccination in this country. And that’s been of great benefit. But if you don’t give the whole picture to people, or people don’t get the whole picture, because there’s a responsibility on both sides here, then people may feel disenfranchised. They may have felt like that beforehand. And they may not feel they’ve really got a nuanced enough set of information for who they are.

Freddie Sayers: But you’ve made the decision not to take the Covid vaccine. Is that a measurement of risk and reward for you?

 

Dr Steve James: It’s in the context of my preferences. So I’m happy to take the risk of having Covid. Because I’ve looked at it, I’ve thought about it, I’ve seen who of my friends who have had it, what’s the likely scenarios to play out.

 

And for myself, I’ve spent a lot of time looking into health, into all the different aspects of health. And I think I can manage a pretty decent job for myself. And so I know my risk profile is really pretty low.

 

Freddie Sayers: What’s the risk that you’re worried about?

 

Dr Steve James: Of having Covid?

 

Freddie Sayers: Of the vaccine.

 

Dr Steve James: So I don’t worry about the risk of the vaccine, in particular. Because I don’t think about the risk of any medicine I don’t want to take.

 

Freddie Sayers: But if it’s a risk-reward decision, you must have reached the point where you decided for you, given your particular risk profile, you thought the risks outweigh the reward in some way. And you’re young enough for it not to be a very threatening disease for you. What’s the downside for you of taking it?

 

Dr Steve James: Firstly, is there a benefit for me and is there a benefit for others? So is there a benefit for me? Well, personally, I now know I’ve had Covid. At some point, I was asymptomatic. I’ve now got antibodies.

 

Freddie Sayers: But when did you have Covid?

 

Dr Steve James: I don’t know. So I’ve been testing frequently. There was a period of time obviously at the beginning when I wasn’t testing, I might have had it then. But in all the time I’ve been testing, then I’ve always tested negative. So I just don’t know.

 

Freddie Sayers: But you have antibodies.

 

Dr Steve James: I have antibodies.

 

Freddie Sayers: So if you didn’t have antibodies, would you take the vaccine?

 

Dr Steve James: Well, I had a few months when I had the opportunity to take the vaccine, didn’t know I had antibodies, and decided not to. And that’s because I think that when the benefit for an individual is likely to be very small, you can give it some time. You can sit and say:

 

“Well, why not wait a year, or two years, or three years, or five years, to see the impact? Or see to the genuine side effect profile of a medication?”

 

Freddie Sayers: So you’re worried about side effects then? It’s this question of myocarditis, or whatever the potential side effects are. When it comes down to it, even if it’s a small chance, is that what you judge to be too big a risk compared to the reward that you might get for it?

 

Dr Steve James: So again, I don’t see a potential reward of anything I’m interested in. From the risk side of things, the risk is very small of a serious event. But I have got a friend whose family member is young, and had myocarditis, a colleague at work who had a pericarditis. We’ve seen three relatively young, healthy people coming to King’s College Hospital post-vaccination, who’ve died. So that’s not zero.

 

Although the chances are very small. So when you work in a hospital. And you see some of those patients, you’re seeing a very select group. But they’re on your radar.

 

Freddie Sayers: So do you feel like it’s, because you’ve had some personal experience of those things that you’re more moved by the potential risks, and less persuaded just by the risks as described by the official studies?

 

Dr Steve James: Yeah, we’re human beings, aren’t we? So when we’ve seen something, we don’t forget it. Because otherwise you’d go back to the same place where the tiger was. And you get eaten, or your kids get eaten the next time around. So you do remember things that are riskier. And you do attribute more weight to that.

 

Freddie Sayers: Is that scientific?

 

Dr Steve James: Is that scientific? Is there an advantage to remembering where the risk lay? Like I said, with a tiger, yes. Take yourself back to being a caveman and cavewoman. Our biology is built around survival and procreation. So, if you don’t remember where the danger was, and attribute more weight to that, you’re less likely to survive. Is that scientific? I mean, it’s intelligence.

Freddie Sayers: So let’s talk about this question of mandating vaccinations for NHS staff. That’s what you actually voiced concerns about to the Health Secretary. The plan is from April, anyone who works in the NHS, if they have refused, or have not taken the Covid vaccine, will not be able to work in the NHS anymore, roughly.

 

Dr Steve James: Pretty much. So it’s called a “condition of deployment”. So it’s not an automatic termination of your contract. They will try to redeploy you somewhere else. There’s not a lot of places where ICU consultants can be redeployed in a hospital. Essentially, I’ve been told that I’d be fired.

 

Freddie Sayers: So what’s your objection to that?

 

Dr Steve James: My objection to being fired?

 

Freddie Sayers: No. [both laughing] Your objection to that. I mean, the argument goes, that the precedent is already there, Hepatitis B, or other vaccines that medical staff are required to get to be deployed. So it’s not a new precedent. What’s the big deal? Why not just go and get it?

 

Dr Steve James: Okay. So let’s look at the Hepatitis B situation. So before Hepatitis B was made a requirement of employment, we had about 20 years of data on its safety. So that’s very different to Covid.

 

Secondly, Hepatitis B is required, as a rule by a Trust, rather than by law. So that means that if a Trust were to think this is not in the interest of their staff, to move forwards on this, they could do. Next, Hepatitis B is a serious disease for anyone who gets it.

 

Covid-19, as I’ve had it, many others have had it, have proved, it’s rarely a severe disease in people who are young and well. And much more likely to be a severe disease in the elderly. So the risk profile there is quite different. It’s given explicitly to protect the members of staff who work in hospital. So they don’t get Hepatitis B. It’s not talked about as being there to protect your patients.

 

Freddie Sayers: Presuming you’ve taken the Hepatitis B vaccine?

 

Dr Steve James: Yeah.

 

Freddie Sayers: Was that something you had to think deeply about, or was that, …?

 

Dr Steve James: Maybe as we get older, we think more about what we do. When you’re at medical school, I think I had my first boosters when I went to the US to be a medical student, doing an elective there. And it was, if you don’t get it. You’re not going to be doing the next bit. So there’s also a difference.

 

That’s something I didn’t mention before. Is, if you are required to do something at an entry point, you’ve got a decision to go in a another direction. But if you get asked to do something, when you’re mid career – I think I’m still mid career – then where do you go? So there’s a difference.

 

Freddie Sayers: So you were talking about this principle of informed consent. Is that the principle that you feel is most egregiously being broken here by requiring people?

 

Dr Steve James: So if I as a doctor, I’m going to ask you to have your bodily consent, your bodily autonomy respected, it’s a bit odd if I don’t have my own respect, isn’t it? So if I come to you to make a decision about what you have, it’s a fundamental move away from the paternalistic medical model of “now you take this tablet”, or “you’re going to have this operation”.

 

It’s to respect the patient, as an individual, to go to them, to try to understand how they weigh up risks and benefits. To present those risks and benefits clearly to the patient, and try to help them be sure they understand that, and then make a decision in light of that.

 

So the same risk-benefit profile will provide different decisions in different patients. And that’s considered appropriate in medical care.

 

Freddie Sayers: And that’s not what’s happening to you now as a NHS staff member?

 

Dr Steve James: Precisely! That has been taken away. Someone else has made the decision on the risk-benefit profile, and said:

 

“You must!”

 

So, even if I disagree with the risk-benefit profile, even if we’d looked at the numbers, and I said:

 

“Well, actually, you don’t know quite how long the tail is on potential side effects. We don’t know how long the potential tail is on this. If it’s 20 years of data. Maybe we could be confident that the virus is changing.”

 

But we don’t understand the virus well enough to really have clarity on those things. So that risk benefit profile is going to be different for different people.

 

Freddie Sayers: So is that, this principle of informed consent, the thing that really upset you? I mean, you’re standing there in the hospital, the Health Secretary comes to visit, normally it’s a few polite bits of banter, you shake the hand. And then you get back to your job.

 

What was it that made you stand up and voice your concerns to Sajid Javid? When you think about it, what is the thing that got you going most strongly?

Dr Steve James: What got me going the most was knowing that the voices of colleagues are not being heard. I knew that I just had this opportunity to step forwards and say something that thousands of colleagues would want to make a statement on. So for the last month, or two, colleagues have been winking and nudging each other and having meetings outside the hospital grounds, and making small social media groups to support each other. Because they’re worried like hell about losing their jobs, or being forced to have a vaccine!

 

And those people don’t know, or haven’t had the opportunity to have their voices heard. So, if there are all these people around. And we’re talking about 10% of the NHS, who are being threatened with the loss of their livelihood, come on! I mean, their voices should be heard!

 

And the thing is, is that we know that if you say something that is against what’s called “the narrative” — that’s considered to be against the narrative. So if you saying it isn’t, isn’t in alignment with the narrative, it’s considered against the narrative. It’s considered dangerous for society.

 

Freddie Sayers: You’ve now you’ve now stepped into that role. I asked you just before we started the cameras, what it was like to go back to hospital today, the first day back at work since you were talked about across all the national media. What was the response like, from colleagues?

 

Dr Steve James: I understand the position of my colleagues. They’ve worked incredibly hard. And they really want to see Coronavirus no longer cause the damage it does to people. So I think the response was a reflection of that. There’s a concern that, …

 

Freddie Sayers: I take that as a negative response from what you’re saying?

 

Dr Steve James: Some people. So the majority of people, … But the thing is that people who hold a negative opinion about you are less likely to come forward and let you know, in general. People who feel close to what you’re saying will tend to come to you and tell you those things. It’s a bit hard to know what the overall opinion is.

 

But I’ve had colleagues come up and ask for a selfie. I’ve had a lot of the juniors express support. The families that I’ve spoken to have said:

 

“Aren’t you the doctor on the telly?”

 

And I’ve said, yes. And they’ve all expressed support so far.

 

Freddie Sayers: Because there’s also been a bit of a backlash, it’s got to he said.

 

Dr Steve James: Yep.

 

Freddie Sayers: There has been this movement of other consultants and senior doctors going on social media and saying:

 

“Well, I’m a consultant anaesthetist at XY hospital. And I strongly believe in the vaccine. I’ve taken it, my kids have taken it!”

 

How are we supposed to judge? You say it’s 10%. Other people are saying 99% of doctors take the other view. How are we supposed to get a sense of where that support, or not, really lies?

 

Dr Steve James: Well, I mean, Clive Kay said on the BBC that 10% of his workforce, of 14,000 people, are not vaccinated. That’s not my figure. That’s the Trust’s figure.

 

Freddie Sayers: So do you think those people will stick it out? If April comes, if this policy remains. Do you think a large majority of that 10% will actually take the decision to forego their job, rather than take this vaccine?

 

Dr Steve James: So from 120,000, which was the figure published, I believe, by the government at the time they announced it in November, they reckon probably 20, or 30,000 had already been vaccinated, but the trust didn’t have evidence of the vaccination status. So there was a group formed called NHS 100k, based on the idea that there’s 100,000 people out there at present.

 

Some of those people are not going to have an alternative, and not wish to explore that alternative. And they’re probably get alternative employment. And they are going to have a vaccine, under coercion essentially. That’s not a good thing for those staff.

 

Freddie Sayers: What about you?

 

Dr Steve James: If push comes to shove, I’m not going to have the vaccine, no.

 

Freddie Sayers: So you would lose your job rather than, …

 

Dr Steve James: Yeah. I’ll lose my job.

 

Freddie Sayers: Why? You talk about risk-reward. I’m interested there, because clearly the risks of losing your job might change that calculus. But you obviously feel so strongly about it. And this is what I think mystifies a lot of people.

 

Why some people feel so strongly about this issue, that they’re literally prepared to forego their career to defend it. Explain to us how you could feel so strongly about it?

 

Dr Steve James: I’m a human being more than I’m a worker. I don’t believe I’ll starve, if I don’t have a job in the NHS.

 

Freddie Sayers: You’d go private, essentially?

 

Dr Steve James: No! I won’t be able to go private in the UK.

 

Freddie Sayers: I see.

 

Dr Steve James: So not in the UK. So the rules are about NHS England, not about Wales, not about Scotland. The Republic of Ireland have got different rules.

 

Freddie Sayers: So you would move?

 

Dr Steve James: Yeah. I’d move!

 

Freddie Sayers: Wow!

 

Dr Steve James: Yeah.

 

Freddie Sayers: What do you say to people who are worried that even though you might have a reasonable position, and it’s carefully thought through, and you’re an educated person. And all the rest of it. There has been a big anti-vax movement.

 

Dr Steve James: Mm.

 

Freddie Sayers: Some of which is based on perfectly defensible principle. And some of it has contained scare stories that aren’t true. There was the MMR vaccine controversy a few years ago. Are you worried that you expressing what you are today, can be used by campaigners who are trying to spread fear more generally?

 

I think it’s a reason why a lot of people might feel that you shouldn’t have said anything, because, even though it might be reasonable, it can be misused.

 

Dr Steve James: Yeah. But I don’t agree on balance, that’s the biggest danger. I think the bigger danger is the conversation not being had. So I think that it’s reasonable for a period of time when you want to get a vaccine out in a situation, to have a singular message.

 

But as the benefit for society of increased vaccination goes down, at a certain point, people are asking questions. And the percentage of people, or the minority of people in the UK, adults who haven’t had the vaccine, please let’s give them some credit. They’ve thought about it! They’ve thought about it.

 

And potentially, it’s a reflection of information from anti-vax campaigners. There’s a small chance of that. But let’s please respect the ability of each individual adult in this country to think for themselves. The vast majority of people can think for themselves.

 

Freddie Sayers: This new variant, the Omicron variant, is much more transmissible supposedly, and certainly is better at overcoming vaccines than earlier variants. Do you think the so-called pro-social argument, the idea that one should take a vaccine for the benefit of wider society, because it makes the overall level of infection come down. Do you think that is blown out the water by the Omicron variant?

 

Dr Steve James: If people look around them, they can see breakthrough infection in multiple vaccinated people. Most of us know friends who are multiply vaccinated and got Omicron over Christmas. So we should not look away from what we can see. Doesn’t mean that we should completely run away from vaccines, or Omicron and say:

 

“Oh, it’s all changing now!”

 

You’ve still got a look and still got to gather data. But the data on vaccination has suggested for quite a while now, that it’s not really making a big impact.

 

In August last year, Public Health England stated that being fully vaccinated is going to do little to stop the spread of the virus in infected people. So we’ve known that. That’s the government’s publication.

 

Freddie Sayers: What if it’s little, but still something? I think people will think that. You’re in this responsible position, you’re coming into contact with vulnerable people all the time. Even if it’s only a marginal effect, maybe you should be required to make that contribution, because who knows, it could have an important effect for someone you come in contact with.

 

Dr Steve James: Okay. So there’s a couple of things here. One is that when you get a vaccine, your immune system is very strongly challenged initially. But if you look at, for example, your antibody levels, not your entire immune system, but an important aspect of it, then those antibody levels drop off very rapidly. If you’ve got natural immunity, the antibody levels start off lower. But they wane at a much slower pace.

 

And then you’ve got people who haven’t got antibodies, or haven’t been infected at all. So after three months — I said two months in the interview. But that was wrong, it was three months — the protection from the Oxford vaccine is equivalent to no previous exposure and no vaccination. And the confidence intervals, so where the people who wrote the study are confident, the range is between two and four months.

 

Freddie Sayers: So that’s the effect on transmission, whether you might catch and pass on the disease, not the effect on how ill you get?

 

Dr Steve James: Yes. So that’s about transmission. And so if you imagine a sort of curve sloping down towards unvaccinated, then actually, because it’s a curve, you’ve got to be further back than halfway to have half that extra protection. That means you’ve got to be vaccinated probably every four to six weeks, in order to maintain a significant level of difference, even a small, but significant level of difference.

 

Freddie Sayers: What’s wrong with that? Are you not happy to be vaccinated every four to six weeks? [chuckling].

Dr Steve James: No, I’m not. I’ve also got friends and colleagues who attribute other minor problems to the vaccine. Fatigue, changes. I don’t think we’ve got good, safe historic evidence for taking multiple vaccine doses on a programme like that.

 

The other thing that’s really important is, what does the patient want from their doctor? Doctors think that patients want doctors with loads of knowledge. And doctors worry about having enough knowledge and being professional enough. And all these kinds of things.

 

And the list of things that doctors think patients want are quite different from what patients say they want. So patients want a doctor who’s compassionate, who’s going to listen to them, who’s going to speak clearly and honestly to them, and weigh up the risk and balance of things.

 

So as an individual, you have to decide. What’s. The best way of delivering good care as a doctor. And all of these NHS frontline professionals, they’re professionals. They are professionals at caring, and at doing the best they can for their patients.

 

So they are making assessments on what’s the best thing for me to do, to be able to overall, give the best care I can for the patient.

 

So that involves your hygiene when you meet a patient. The time you spend with the patient. It involves whether you wear PPE, whether you take the time to look into the patient’s notes, whether you take the time to do all these other factors, and just be present with the patient. And that’s a much bigger picture than just, …

 

Freddie Sayers: So why does not having the vaccine make you a better doctor to the patient?

 

Dr Steve James: No, it doesn’t. But if I’m not true to my own beliefs, I’m not a good example of someone who’s making the risk-benefit analysis for myself and deciding on that. And I think that when you’re with another human being, and you’re — doctors and nurses are in incredibly private spaces with a patient. They are in extremely unusual, often scary situations, they’re worried. And we come very close, and share things with patients that you don’t share often with other people.

 

And so that ability to be genuine with another human being, it requires you, I believe, to know yourself. And to be present in yourself.

 

Freddie Sayers: So you feel actually that by taking a vaccine that you didn’t want to take, you would in some way compromise your integrity, or compromise your ability to look patients in the eye and feel like a good doctor.

 

Dr Steve James: Yeah, if I can’t look myself in the eye, it’s gonna be difficult to look a patient in the eye.

 

Freddie Sayers: So I’m coming back here to what we should actually do, Steve.

 

Dr Steve James: Yes, please.

 

Freddie Sayers: Because we’ve got Omicron. It looks like it’s very transmissive, even amongst vaccinated people. Are you saying that the policy should be, offer it to everybody, encourage it — the vaccine, I mean, — offer it, encourage it for old and vulnerable people, and just leave it at that? What’s the Steve James policy?

 

Dr Steve James: The problem for society is the people who get sick from Covid-19. That’s what we’re trying to change. So if you look at that population of people who are getting sick from Covid-19, you can look at people who get very sick and die. And you can look at those who get moderately sick, and those who are less sick. And what we need to do, is to be open and clear about who is getting sick.

 

Freddie Sayers: According to you it’s unvaccinated people, or at least 70% of your ICU patients.

 

Dr Steve James: Yes! And I have no problem with that. That is the fact, that is the situation. But they are not people who look like you, or have a health profile like yourself, or like myself. So I don’t understand why the message is:

 

“Everybody take it! And let’s force some people to be an example.”

 

When actually, the people who are most going to have a problem are the elderly, are the vulnerable, are those who’ve got significant comorbidities.

Freddie Sayers: So when would that line start with you?

 

Dr Steve James: It’s a combination of factors. So the fit and well 60 year old, is at a much lower risk profile than the obese 40 year old.

 

Freddie Sayers: But a fit and well 60 year old, would you still not advise them to take the vaccine? I know it’s all an individual case, but the government has to have a policy ultimately. Are you saying that a 60 year old, otherwise healthy person, should take the vaccine, or not?

 

Dr Steve James: We have data in this country. And we should be presenting to people that data in an accessible form that shows people, let’s say, the risk profile of dying from Covid at different age groups, and for different levels of health status. And then also with that, in each box, basically, you’ve got to be able to say, what’s the risk of dying from the vaccine, in that age group? It cannot be too hard for the government to create a website, where you have a drop-down menu, say “this is my age group”, “these are my risk factors”, this is this. Click! It then says:

 

“Your chance of dying from Covid is one in 5000.”

 

I’ll be more than happy to help put it together if they want to do that.:

 

“Your chance of dying from the vaccine is this, based on the data in this country.”

 

And then let people say:

 

“Oh, actually look! For me, it’s very clear!”

 

For many people, that is going to be more favourable, so the benefit is going to be greater, than the risk. When, you know, you’ve got a pretty individualised set of information, you can then make that choice. Choice!

 

You’re not being forced to make it. But when you know, that your risk of dying from Covid is one in 100, if you get it, and your risk of having the vaccine and having a problem from that is one in 10 million, or one in, …

 

It’s not quite so high as that. If you look at the VAERS database in the US, it’s about, as a population, about one in 45,000. Most of those deaths occur in the elderly. So we haven’t got information that delineates that at present, as far as I’m aware. So the risk of dying from the vaccine is going to be very low, also in that age group. People should be able to weigh those things up.

 

And another thing is that, to people who aren’t vaccinated at present, why not find some way to encourage those people to come to their medical professional, and discuss those things together in the light of their views? You could do that with NHS staff. You could say:

 

“Every member of staff who’s not vaccinated needs to go and have a meeting with their line manager and have the risks and benefits presented to them. And then they make their decision on that.”

 

Freddie Sayers: I think probably, I’m speculating now. But I guess even Sajid Javid and government Ministers would probably quite like the plan you suggest, in an ideal world. Some sort of perfectly tailored individual risk profile and everyone can, …

 

But ultimately, they’ve got to have a policy. This pandemic has caused such a lot of disruption. You’ve witnessed the pressure on your own hospital wards, people are exhausted, 70% of people in ICUs are unvaccinated. So they just say:

 

“Sorry, your particular risk profile, and the perfect way of doing it is not available. It’s not an option, we need to be a bit more rough!”

 

Dr Steve James: Yeah.

 

Freddie Sayers: And that’s the decision they’ve made. Do you understand that?

 

Dr Steve James: I understand it. But I believe the value in that method has waned. And now we’re at a point where the simplicity of the message is actually starting to frustrate the population.

 

Freddie Sayers: Do you think there’s a backlash against it, it seems sort of propagandistic?

 

Dr Steve James: It’s coming. That sort of sentiment is building.

 

So, if you take NHS workers, the population knows that we were clapped a year and a half ago, and they now know we’re being sacked! We’re going to be sacked! So who wouldn’t ask questions about why that transformation? How does this process protect the NHS? Do you really protect the NHS by losing a large chunk of your staff?

 

So there are questions that, … And another big question is, what’s the data on natural immunity versus unvaccinated, versus vaccinated? I don’t hear the message.

Freddie Sayers: So you think information around natural immunity, information around potential risks to the vaccine, is not being made properly available?

 

Dr Steve James: Yes. I do think that. I do think the message of simplicity of:

 

“Have the booster, have the jabs.”

 

Is a message that works for a large part of the population. But for the population who are not taking a vaccine, you need a different approach. Because your approach hasn’t worked.

 

Freddie Sayers: Final question for you, Steve. Do you think it’s going to happen? Because I have a suspicion that come April, this policy might be reconsidered. There’s always a reason when governments plan to do something long in the future, because it gives them a chance to reconsider.

 

Do you think you speaking out and the effect of Omicron, where it’s so transparently not especially reduced, transmission-wise, by these vaccines. Do you think it’s going to change? Do you think you will actually lose your job?

 

Dr Steve James: I’m a very hopeful person. I do see the possibility of a change. I do see Omicron giving the possibility for a delay, and a review. I do see the possibility of Trusts to contact the government and say:

 

“We’re worried about losing our staff.”

 

And that seems to be a bigger problem than whether they’re vaccinated, or not. Because we’re not really worried about transmission from staff to patients.

 

Freddie Sayers: So you think you will likely be a practising consultant in critical care, still, at the end of April?

 

Dr Steve James: No. I don’t think the chances are better than 50%. But I’m gunning for it!

 

Freddie Sayers: Thank you so much for coming in and explaining yourself and your points of view.

Hayley: Oh, it’s horrible! It’s a horrible feeling! You feel like you’re in prison. You feel like you’ve done something wrong! It’s inhumane what they’re doing. You are so small, they just overpower you. And you’re literally nothing! It’s like:

 

“You do what we say, or you’re in trouble! We’ll lock you up for longer.”

 

Yeah, they were even threatening me that if I was to do this again, :

 

“We will extend your time in here.”

 

 

 

Freedie Sayers: Hello. And welcome to UnHerd. I’m Freddie Sayers. Australia! Until recently, that country was most famous for it’s sunshine and relaxed attitude. Well, since the COVID pandemic hit, we’ve all got to know another side of Australia. With some of the longest and most stringent lockdowns and travel restrictions in the world, it’s become a case study of what happens when a government will do anything to keep COVID numbers low.

 

Their latest policy is to build special camps, COVID internment camps, to which infected, and suspected infected, people are moved. The biggest of these camps is called ‘Howard Springs’. It houses up to 2,000 inmates. Surrounded by tall fences, and carefully policed against attempts to escape. It’s been described as ‘the gold standard’ of such camps. And is being replicated across Australia.

 

Joining us today on the line from Darwin, in the Northern Territories, is Hayley Hodgson. She has just returned from a 14-day, let’s say, “stay”, at Howard Springs. And she’s agreed to tell us all about it. Hi, Hayley.

 

 

Hayley: Hi, how are you going?

 

Freedie Sayers: So we are really keen to just hear what’s happened to you, it sounds like you’ve had quite an interesting last couple of weeks. Take us right back to the beginning. How did this all start?

 

Hayley: Okay, so how it all started was, a friend of mine went to work and got tested for COVID. He had a little bit of cold. He tested positive. He got put into this quarantine camp. And then we went about our days as normal. And then the investigators started to knock on our doors, and stuff like that. So then what actually happened was, I had investigators come. I walked out front cs.

 

Freedie Sayers: So just to interrupt you. So how did they investigate you? Were you part of a contact tracing list?

 

Hayley: How they contacted me was, I have a scooter, and they ran my number plate. And they ran the number plates and saw the footage that I was with a person who had tested positive. And that’s how they knocked on my door, and knew where I lived, from running my number plate.

 

Freedie Sayers: Okay. So then do they call you up? Or did they come straight to the house, or what happens next?

 

Hayley: Yeah. So they came straight to my house. I didn’t get a call, or anything. I literally walked out the front. And it was two undercover investigators. And they said:

 

“Do, you know, so and so?”

 

I said:

 

“Yes.”

 

They said:

 

“Have you been with them?”

 

I said:

 

“Yep.”

 

I told them my whereabouts, where I’d been, everything like that. And they said:

 

“No worries.”

 

And they said:

 

“Have you had a COVID test done?”

 

I said:

 

“Yes, I had.”

 

When I hadn’t. Just, because I was so scared, in the moment. And I’ve been to one of these quarantine camps before, only literally a month before this, so I know what it was like. I was just really scared. It was just a horrible position to be in. And I just lied and said, :

 

“Look, yeah, I have.”

 

When I hadn’t. They said:

 

“Okay.”

 

And they drove off. About five minutes later, they called me and they said:

 

“We’ve tried to check the system and your name’s nowhere. We can’t find you.”

 

And I said:

 

“I’ve lied to you. I’m completely sorry. I’m so apologetic. I’m scared! This is just such a scary thing!”

 

And they said:

 

“Yep, righto, stay there. Someone’s going to come and test you.”

 

I said:

 

“All right.”

 

So I stayed there. And I just waited for someone to come and test me. No one came to test me. The next people who rocked up at my house were two other police officers. They blocked my driveway.

 

Freedie Sayers: So these are actually uniformed police officers, normal police officers.

 

Hayley: Yep. So then the police officers blocked my driveway, I walked out and I said:

 

“What’s going on, are you guys testing me for COVID? What’s happening?”

 

They said:

 

“No, you’re getting taken away. And you have no choice. You’re going to Howard Springs. You either come with us now, and we’ll put you in the back of the divvy van, or you can have a choice to get a ‘COVID cab’.”

 

So of course, I chose the COVID cab. Because they said:

 

“Well, if we’re to take you, we’re going to hand you a $5,000 fine.”

 

So of course, I didn’t want that to happen. So I just said, :

 

“Look, I don’t consent to this. I don’t understand why I can’t just self-isolate at home, like a lot of other people are doing.”

 

And they just said, :

 

“We’ve just been told from higher up where to take you. And that’s all that there is.”

Freedie Sayers: So, Howard Springs is the biggest COVID camp in Australia, isn’t it?

 

Hayley: Correct, yes.

 

Freedie Sayers: It’s this huge network of cabins — I think we’ve got a picture of it we can put up — that is built to house potentially infected people.

 

 

Hayley: Yeah. So they are literally bringing in now, hundreds of people that are of close contact, or that have COVID. So it doesn’t even matter if you test negative on your first test, your second, or your third. Because you’re a close contact, you have to stay in there for 14 days, no matter what!

 

Freedie Sayers: So, let’s get back to this situation at your house. So these two policemen, what is the choice they give you exactly? It’s:

 

“Come with us in this van, or you get a $5,000 fine.”

 

Hayley: Yep. So it’s:

 

“You come with us, we take you there, and you’re given a $5,000 fine, or we will call a COVID cab, and we will not fine you.”

 

So it’s pretty much, you have to consent otherwise you’re getting a $5,000 fine.

 

Freedie Sayers: Okay. So then, some hours later, the COVID cab arrives?

 

Hayley: Yeah, it was probably… The policeman stayed at my driveway until this cab came. They said:

 

“Can you please go pack a bag.”

 

So I went and packed a bag. And whilst I was packing my bag, I had my house-mates at the front speaking to them. And they said:

 

“Is she able to just do a test. And once that test comes back negative, is she able to leave, and come back to normal life?”

 

And these police officers said:

 

“Yes, we’re pretty sure that, … All you have to do is return a negative test, and you’ll be released.”

 

So that calmed me down knowing, okay, well if I return a negative test, I can just go back home. So I got in the COVID cab.

 

Freedie Sayers: I think we’ve got some footage that your mum took, actually, that we can play of you waving goodbye, and getting into the back of a van!

 

[Phone video — start]

 

 

Harley’s mother: I’ve just come, and she’s being taken away. But look at the COVID van! ‘Bar, bistro, pokies and functions’. How professional! Long live COVID!

 

[Phone video — finish]

 

 

Hayley: It is a COVID taxi. But it’s actually a casino bus. So driving there. And then the police escorted me in. I never saw those police again, they left. They weren’t allowed into the facility. So then new police came. And they were in charge. Obviously, I was very distressed. I was crying. I was saying:

 

“This isn’t fair.”

 

It was just horrible to go through. I stood there. And I just said:

 

“Can I please have a test now, because I need these test results back, as I will be negative.”

 

And later on I was negative. The whole time I was there I was negative. And I said:

 

“Once these go negative, am I allowed to leave?”

 

And she said:

 

“No, you’re here for the 14 days.”

 

Freedie Sayers: So the first time you found out that you were there for 14 days was when you arrived?

 

Hayley: Yep.

 

Freedie Sayers: Okay, so you get taken to a room? Is it a cabin? What’s life like inside these camps?

 

Hayley: You literally get put on the back of a golf buggy with your bags. And these people are in hazmat suits and everything. They don’t want to come near you, because they think you’re infectious. And they literally drop you to your room. And they leave you. They don’t come and say anything, they don’t check up, they don’t do anything. You get delivered your meals once a day. And you are just left.

 

Freedie Sayers: And are you allowed to talk to people? Have you spoken to people from inside the camp?

 

Hayley: We can, but we’re only allowed to stay in our designated areas. Which is nothing, maybe two metres. We have a deck that we’re allowed to go out, and maybe get a little bit of sunlight. But that is it. If you get caught off your decking without a mask on, or anything, you get a $5,000 fine. And that happened to me. So, I didn’t get a $5,000 fine, I got a written-up warning. I actually sent you guys some footage on that as well.

 

Freedie Sayers: Yeah. So, tell us about what we’re about to see here. So these are the officials inside the camp, who are disciplining you, because you were apparently not being contained within your area. Is that, right?

 

Hayley: Yeah, correct. So I went to the bin, to put something in the bin. But I was not wearing a mask. Mind you, I actually have an exemption, I don’t need to wear a mask. I have a medical condition. And the person that came to hand me the notice, was another police officer.

Camp Staff (male) 1: So, what’s the go?

 

Camp Staff (male) 2: So this. I’m going to give you a warning, yeah? It’s an official warning — that you have to stay on your balcony and obey the rules, while you’re here. If we have to go over the rules again, I don’t care.

 

 

Hayley: So am I allowed to go to the laundry?

 

Camp staff (male) 2: You’re allowed to go to the laundry. But you’ve got to wear a mask. Yeah?

 

Hayley: Yeah, righto.

 

Camp staff (male) 2: And you definitely can’t go up the fencing rail. But you’re allowed to go to the laundry, yeah? That’s always been the case, yeah.

 

Hayley: Right. So if I was sitting just here, which is right near the fence — why are these guys in a cabin that’s right near the fence? It makes no sense, does it?

 

Camp staff (male) 2: Yeah. But you can’t leave your balcony to go to the fence to talk to somebody else. That’s just obvious, yeah?

 

 

Hayley: So if I was at that balcony cs.

 

Camp staff (male) 2: Again, it doesn’t have to make sense! There has to be lines everywhere drawn, yeah? And one of the lines is you cannot leave your balcony, and you cannot go to someone else. When it makes no sense, or doesn’t seem right to you, that is the line. And that’s what the law is. And that’s how it goes.

 

Hayley: The law?

 

Camp staff (male) 2: Well, the CHO direction.

 

Hayley: There’s a law that says that?

 

Camp staff (male) 2: A CHO direction, yeah. There’s a CHO direction on how the behaviour must be done. Especially in this area, because it’s much more highly infectious, and likely to have infected people here.

 

Hayley: ‘Highly infectious’, when all of us people are negative?

 

 

Camp staff (male) 2: There’s a risk. So far, the risk is still very high, yeah? While you’re here, can we just do that? Otherwise, next time it’s a $5,000 fine. And we don’t want to do that.

 

Hayley: It’s a $5,000 fine if what?

 

Camp staff (male) 2: If you breach again.

 

Hayley: If I walk out onto that path?

 

Camp staff (male) 2: Without your mask on, or for no reason other than laundry. If I cross that yellow line, …

 

 

Camp staff (female): Saying that you’ve broken the rule.

 

Hayley: That I’ve broken the rule, I will be issued with a $5,000 fine?

 

Camp staff (male) 2: That’s correct.

 

Hayley: Right.

 

Camp staff (male) 2: We could even do that now. But we’re giving the warning first. Have a chat with you, because it’s a big fine. We’re all just doing the right thing, yeah? Like I said, I’m not here to fight with you!

 

Hayley: Yeah.

 

Camp staff (male) 2: I don’t want to fight with you!

 

Hayley: Yep.

 

Camp staff (male) 2: I just want everybody to do the right thing. And unfortunately it’s my job to make sure they do. The ins and outs have got nothing to do with me. I’m just there to make sure the rules are adhered to.

 

[Phone video — finish]

 

Freedie Sayers: So what did that experience make you think? What was your feeling about being in that situation, with those people in control of your every movement?

 

Hayley: Oh, it’s horrible! It’s a horrible feeling! You feel like you’re in prison. You feel like you’ve done something wrong! It’s inhumane what they’re doing. You are so small, they just overpower you. And you’re literally nothing. It’s like:

 

“You do what we say, or you’re in trouble, we’ll lock you up for longer.”

 

Yeah, they were even threatening me that if I was to do this again:

 

“We will extend your time in here.”

 

Freedie Sayers: So the officers within the camp have the power to keep you there longer if you misbehave?

 

Hayley: That’s what they were saying, yep!

 

Freedie Sayers: And at one stage, is it true that they offered you Valium?

 

 

Hayley: Yeah, so, because I was so distressed, and I said:

 

“Can you just please let me out for a walk, or a run? I’m in this little box and I can’t move. I’m anxious, I’m feeling not well, I need to get out.”

 

And they literally said:

 

“We’ve got a doctor calling you. And we’ll get some Valium prescribed to you. That you can call us anytime you like. And you can have Valium.”

 

Freedie Sayers: Just to calm you down?

 

Hayley: Yeah.

 

Freedie Sayers: So when did this end, Hayley? You were in there for the full 14 days?

 

Hayley: Yeah, correct. Yeah, 14 days.

 

Freedie Sayers: And that was a few days ago that you came out?

 

Hayley: Yeah, I think I’ve been out a week and a half now.

 

Freedie Sayers: So during that whole time, how many times have you tested? And did you ever test positive?

 

Hayley: Never tested positive. At all! And I was tested three times.

 

Freedie Sayers: So at the moment, you haven’t had COVID?

 

Hayley: Never had COVID. And I was a close contact of someone, never got it, and I was treated literally like a criminal.

 

 

Freedie Sayers: What’s happened to you since you came out?

 

Hayley: I no longer have a job, as I was casual, at where I was working. So I am now unemployed.

 

Freedie Sayers: So you were working at a store, or what? How did that happen?

 

Hayley: Yeah. So I was just working in a retail store. Obviously, casual, you don’t get paid any sick leave, or for being away from your job. So I wasn’t getting paid, or anything whilst I was being in there. They compensated me, I think, $1, 500 for the two weeks. And that was all.

 

Freedie Sayers: So you’ve lost your job?

 

Hayley: Yeah. Now currently unemployed, because of this situation.

 

Freedie Sayers: There’s been a lot of press in Australian media about how these camps are really luxurious. And it’s like having a holiday. Did it feels like a holiday for you?

 

Hayley: No. No way! You are literally trapped, in a box, on your decking, with fences all around you, cameras everywhere. It’s just astounding! Like you’re literally treated like a prisoner in there.

 

Freedie Sayers: So, let’s zoom out a little bit, Hayley. You’ve been living through this for the past couple of years. What is happening, do you think, to Australia, and to your country?

 

Hayley: Well, it’s so hard. It’s like people aren’t — we just abide by the rules. And we’re just going with the flow. But this flow doesn’t seem to be getting any better. We have hardly any numbers, and they’re doing this to us, still. It’s just crazy! I originally lived in Victoria, Melbourne, where it was really, really bad. And we’d been in lockdowns for months and months! And the reason why I moved to Darwin was to get away from that. Because Darwin wasn’t as bad, and the lockdowns weren’t happening. So once I moved up here, it was all fine.

 

And then that one case happened, and — it’s just crazy. They locked the whole state down, and just sending heaps and heaps of people there. Because obviously, Darwin is the only place that has this quarantine camp, in Australia.

 

Freedie Sayers: Because in the international media, it’s been reported that Australia is relaxing a bit, or at least the rules about international travel are relaxing. They no longer plan to have Zero COVID, they’re going to understand that they need to manage it. Does it feel like it’s getting better over there?

 

Hayley: Ohh! I think every state is different. At the moment, Darwin is really, really harsh with what’s going on and stuff. I think other states are relaxing as more people are getting vaccinated. But the unvaccinated people who choose not to be, are just looked at like prisoners, and that they’re doing the wrong thing.

 

Freedie Sayers: So what are you going to do next, Hayley? What comes next for you?

 

Hayley: What comes next? Well, find a job! That’s definitely! And I really want to get awareness out to what is going on. These camps are getting built all over the world. I know there’s another one getting built in Victoria at the moment. And as I said, it doesn’t matter if you’re not vaccinated. Whether you have one dosage of the vaccination, or two. It doesn’t matter your vaccination status, you can get sent to these camps if you are of close contact. Like I was. Or if you lie to authorities. As I found out, because I said that I had a test when I hadn’t. And then I found out later that I was in there for punishment.

 

Freedie Sayers: Who told you that?

 

Hayley: CDC. Centers for Disease Control.

 

Freedie Sayers: So they say that your sentence, your two-week incarceration, was actually punishment for having said you got a test, when you didn’t?

 

Hayley: Yeah, yep. When other people were in close contact. And they were allowed to self-isolate at home. Where there was probably about 10 of them, and I was the only one that got sent there. And that’s what I was saying:

 

“It doesn’t make sense! Why am I the only one here? I want answers to this.”

 

And that was the only time that I got an answer is when I rang CDC. And they said:

 

“Yeah, there’s a high chance that you’re in there for punishment, because you lied to authorities.”

 

Freedie Sayers: At any stage of this process, did anyone tell your rights? Have you had any contact with a lawyer? Has there been any kind of legal process?

 

Hayley: Nothing, I’ve had nothing. It’s so hard. Nobody knows, that’s the thing! You’re on your own in these situations. And you’re just left! That’s all, there’s no help when you’re in this camp. And there’s no help when you’re out of this camp. It’s just:

 

“You do your time, and we’ll leave you alone.”

 

That’s all there is.

 

Freedie Sayers: So we’ve heard that people have been trying to escape this Howard Springs camp in the past few days. What do about that?

 

Hayley: Yeah, I did hear that I think three people have escaped. I don’t know if they’ve found them, yet. But yeah, they have escaped.

 

 

Freedie Sayers: And do you understand why they would do that? Give us a summary of what your mental state has been like during this period. And what the whole experience has done to you.

 

Hayley: Oh, trust me, when I was in there, I was thinking:

 

“How do I escape? But, what are going to be the consequences if I do? And if I get caught?”

 

It’s an ongoing thing. Your mental health, as I said, you’re in a box! Your mind is going a million miles an hour, you feel horrible. Yeah, it’s just horrible what they putting people through. Because you feel like you’ve done something wrong, when you haven’t! All you were doing is going about your normal life, and you were close contacts with someone who was ill. That’s all it is.

Freedie Sayers: That was Hayley Hodgson. Thanks to her for telling her story. She joined us from Darwin in the Northern Territory in Australia, telling us about her last two, or three weeks, which have been, to say the least, quite unusual.

 

And let’s just remember that this is a person who has not had COVID. Even now. And here she is, she’s lost her job. And she’s just spent 14 days in involuntary incarceration. Raises, I think, some quite important questions about what the end goal of all this is.
