Freddie Sayers meets Tim the Canadian trucker.

Press coverage of Ottawa’s trucker convoy has been more focused on confederate flags and far Right factions than the truckers themselves. To get a view from the ground, UnHerd dispatched roving reporter Leila Mechoui to take us on a tour of the city centre. Beaming in from the cabin of his truck, Freddie Sayers spoke to Tim, an unvaccinated trucker-turned-protester. Tim told Freddie what first motivated him to join the convoy and why he still isn’t moving.

Tim: They put an injunction on us, and we can’t honk our horns for 10 days. Well, as soon as they did that, then the horns honked for about an hour straight.

 

Freddie Sayers: Hello. And welcome to UnHerd. I’m Freddie Sayers.

 

The Canadian trucker movement in protest at the COVID mandates started as a Canadian thing and seems to have spread worldwide. There are replica movements going on in places as far afield as Austria and Australia.

 

Well, the media is covering it kind of strangely! At times it seems very negative. And we’re told there are White supremacist elements within the protests. And other times it doesn’t seem to be covered much at all.

 

We couldn’t get there ourselves. But happily, we have Leila Mechoui there in Ottawa, in the snow, who is going to give us a bit of a tour and report on what she sees.

 

Hey, Leila, where are you exactly?

 

Leila Mechoui: So I’m standing in front of the Canadian Parliament. This is like the main gate, it’s covered with signs. So you can’t see the actual building. But I can scoot over, and here it is. That’s the Parliament. There are fewer protesters right there. They’re mostly gathered on the other side of the camera. Someone’s speaking on stage. But if you look backwards. Yeah, there we go.

 

Freddie Sayers: So what have you seen over the past week, or two? We’ve got reports of some negative, or angry behavior, or some people are saying it’s been like a big celebration – what’s been your experience of the atmosphere out there?

 

Leila Mechoui: Well, of course, everyone’s going to have a different experience. But I can say, I’ve spent many hours, at all times of the day at the protests – I’ve come at night, I’ve come in the morning, I’ve come in the afternoon – it’s always been nothing but a festive and friendly atmosphere. I have nothing but positive interactions.

 

The truckers, the protesters, are all very keen to speak to you, and talk to you about where they’re from and why they’re here, etc.

 

Freddie Sayers: What have been the key messages that you’ve heard talking to all of those truckers? What are the big ideas that they want to get across?

 

Leila Mechoui: I think the most unanimous message is that they want to see an end to the mandates. They think that they’re unfair. They think that they’re overbearing. Some of them have some mistrust with regard to the vaccines. Some of them feel like they’ve been maltreated by governments, whether at the Provincial level, or the Federal level.

 

But it is very much mostly about ending the restrictions.

 

Freddie Sayers: Would you say it’s an anti-vax protest? Are there vaccinated truckers attending, or is pretty much everyone not taking the vaccine?

 

Leila Mechoui: I would say, from my experience, many truckers are not vaccinated that are here. And so there’s a bit of a self selection in that. Those that were not vaccinated may have been forced to take a vacation, let’s say, and decided to come here during that time.

 

But there are many people that are vaccinated, especially amongst the protesters during the weekends. So when people are off work, they’ll come. And I’ll speak to people, the vast majority of whom are vaccinated, and they’re happy with the vaccine.

 

But they’re tired. And a lot of them took the vaccine, in fact, because they wanted to see an end to the restrictions.

 

Freddie Sayers: How do normal Ottowans react to this? Because I imagine it’s kind of an imposition for them in their city. Are they angry? Are they understanding? What’s been the reaction?

 

Leila Mechoui: Well, listen. Those who have been angry have been given a lot of space in the Canadian press. I live in Ottawa, I live four kilometres away from Parliament. Where I live, and I would say any neighborhood that’s outside of a three kilometre perimeter, you wouldn’t tell anything’s different! It’s quiet and normal as Ottawa is. It’s a very relatively small city. Nothing much goes on, especially not during the pandemic.

 

But yes. Those who are unhappy with the protesters for various reasons – the main grievance that they had against them was, of course, the honking – had made their voices heard. And the media has chosen to highlight these.

 

Freddie Sayers: Has the honking stopped?

 

Leila Mechoui: Yes, the honking has stopped. And in fact, the other day there was an 81 year old man who had worked for his whole life as a janitor. He was a grandfather of 11 children, just a citizen of Ottawa. He was just driving about and he honked his horn. He wasn’t a part of the protest, or the convoy. And he was arrested by the police, because he did that.

 

So the injunction against the honking is being enforced, and broadly respected.

 

Freddie Sayers: How cold is it, Leila?

 

Leila Mechoui: A lot warmer now than when the protest started. There was an extreme weather warning during the first few days of the protest, so during the weekend. Now today, it’s negative one. So it’s quite warm, actually, for a Canadian winter.

 

Freddie Sayers: How do they stay warm in their trucks?

 

Leila Mechoui: Well, they have to keep them running at all times. Yes, that’s right. They keep them stalling and that provides warmth.

 

Freddie Sayers: Shall we maybe stop and talk to some of these people?

 

Leila Mechoui: How about those people. Better rush over.

 

Hi! Can I talk to you? Ask you about your placard? What are you protesting?

Couple: The lack of debate. There’s no, … We’re fluent in French. Yeah we speak French. But we just want the possibility for people to be able to have a debate. We’re protesting the mandate and the vaccine mandate in particular.

 

Leila Mechoui: Did you initially support the truckers, or, … from the start?

 

Couple: [nodding] That’s great! All the way through.

 

We need to. There was no public debate. It’s crazy! It doesn’t make sense! The censorship.

 

Leila Mechoui: Yeah. Let me try to find someone else.

 

What are you precisely here to support? Like, what about the convoy, do you support?

 

Man: I think the overall message here is, no more mandates.

 

Leila Mechoui: No more mandates, yeah.

 

Man: I don’t care if someone’s vaccinated, go for it.

 

Leila Mechoui: Yeah.

 

Man: I think we have the freedom of thought in our country, freedom of choice, freedom of religion.

 

Leila Mechoui: Yeah.

 

Man: All those things.

 

Woman: They’ve all been taken away. And they need to be restored, because it’s not right to take people’s freedoms away.

 

Leila Mechoui: Yeah.

 

Woman: When people fought for them. People laid their lives down. So that we could have freedom, and you know, I find that people who seem to understand this. The most are the ones who come from a communist country years ago, with women that came with the Polish community who came with the truckers. And they said they left that to come here.

 

Leila Mechoui: Yeah.

 

Woman: And now it’s here.

 

Man: We know that we still live in a beautiful country, with the freedom to – I guess. The problem is that unless you’re vaccinated, the freedoms are being taken away! So, how far is that going to be taken? Maybe our leaders need to be a little bit more accountable to people that maybe they look at as lower on the totem pole.

 

Leila Mechoui: If there’s one thing about this protest, which I guess is a bit irregular, it’s that everyone here is, I would say, over 40, most people have children, many people have grandchildren. So you know, these people don’t really – they’re not here for fun.

 

Freddie Sayers: We would love to go and talk to one of the truckers. I think you’ve got someone there who we might be able to talk to – can we see his truck?

 

Leila Mechoui: So — here’s the truck!

 

Freddie Sayers: This is Tim’s truck, is it?

 

Leila Mechoui: Yes it is.

 

Freddie Sayers: Wonderful. And he’s in there, hopefully.

 

Leila Mechoui: He is.

 

Freddie Sayers: Let’s go and say:

 

“Hi!”

 

Leila Mechoui: Alright, let’s go.

 

Freddie Sayers: Hi, Tim.

 

Leila Mechoui: Hi, Tim! Yeah, you’re doing pretty good.

 

Freddie Sayers: Thanks, Leila. Let’s see if we can now set it up, so we can actually have a chat with Tim directly.

 

So Tim, tell us, are you stuck in your truck? What’s the situation? What are you doing there, and what can you see?

 

Tim: I can see everything, I’m not stuck in here. I go out and play street hockey, and I walk around and that’s, … I hang out in my truck lots, because there’s always lots of people and kids coming that want to visit. So I don’t want them to come into an empty truck. But it’s nice out now. I walk around and hang out. But I do stick kind of close to it.

 

Freddie Sayers: How long have you been there?

 

Tim: Saturday will be two weeks that I’ve been here.

 

Freddie Sayers: Where did you come from? And how long was that trip? And how long are you planning on staying?

 

Tim: Well, I came from Rosemary, Alberta. And that’s 3, 600 kilometres from here. And we left on Monday, and we arrived, basically in Ottawa, Friday night. But that’s normally – I haul cattle for a living – and that’s normally a 3 day drive cat the speed limit. But it was pretty slow going when there’s 40, or 50,000 trucks. So a lot of it was 70/80 kilometres an hour, all the way here.

 

Freddie Sayers: So what was it that made you want to join this protest? Tell us the story.

 

Tim: I was thinking about joining it, when they first started talking about it. And then I was sitting at home watching the news. And the Alberta Premier, and the Alberta Health Minister, looked us all in the face of Alberta, and admitted to us that they had fudged the numbers of over 60% of the positive COVID cases that were hospital cases. They said it was like:

 

“Well, Tim came in with a broken finger. And before we would fix his finger, we made him do a COVID test. And he miraculously turned out positive, even though we had no symptoms. And we wrote them down as a positive COVID hospital case! But it was like, there’s nothing to see here!”

 

And I looked at my wife and I said:

 

“Did they just say that, right? Did I just hear that?”

 

And she said:

 

“Yeah. They just admitted to lying about the numbers, of over 60%!”

Freddie Sayers: You’ve been they’re obviously throughout this pandemic. Were you sort of suspecting things from the beginning? Were you unhappy from the beginning? Or has this grown gradually – when did you start to feel like the response to the pandemic was not sitting right with you?

 

Tim: When I couldn’t go to support my grandkids’ hockey games. Some arenas at home aren’t too bad. Some of them you just can’t go! They won’t let you. You can’t go to restaurants anymore. If they’re being really hard about it. If you’re not vaxxed, you’re not going to Boston Pizza, or Montana’s, or, they won’t let you come in. And then say:

 

“Well, you know, that’s not right!”

 

And then there’s been some vaccine injuries and stuff that they’re not admitting to. And, we have – like a couple in my family – and it’s like:

 

“Oh, it’s from something else, you know. It’s not from that.”

 

And it’s like:

 

“Well, how do know that? When it hasn’t been tested and proven!”

 

Freddie Sayers: So you haven’t taken the vaccine yourself?

 

Tim: No, no, no! My wife was basically forced to take it so that she could go to the old folks home to deal with her mum, who’s 93. And if she wouldn’t have got it, they won’t let her in there! Well, her mum’s 93 years old, somebody needs to go in there and help her out sometimes, right?

 

Freddie Sayers: How much of it was about the vaccine for you, versus the general sense of overbearing restrictions?

 

Tim: Probably more so, overbearing restrictions. Because from the start, I said:

 

“I’m not taking it!”

 

I’m going to wait 5, 10 years to see what the effects are. And then I’ll take it, if it’s all good.”

 

But it was all the other government overreach. I’m sick of paying taxes, and I’m sick of paying for them guys to waste money! And when we’re going in debt.

 

Like, I remember when I was a little kid and the US was a trillion dollars in debt! And it was like, you couldn’t imagine that. And now, here we are, four years later. And we’re the guys that are, like, we’re over a trillion in debt now! And I mean, the US is what 20, 30 trillion in debt?

 

They just keep spending money and giving money away. And they give our news media here 600 million a year, to lie to us! They don’t show the news.

 

They go off on some side streets, and they show a couple of trucks and a couple hundred people. And that’s what they’re sending around Canada, as what’s going on here. And it’s not even close.

 

Freddie Sayers: Tell us what is actually going on then. What have you seen on the news? And what are you seeing in reality? And what’s the difference between them?

 

Tim: Well, I haven’t been watching the news, because, I just don’t anymore. But the people at home are telling me:

 

“Well they’re saying there’s 200 trucks, and 18,000 people, and they’re robbing the food bank, and they’re doing all this! And the place is a mess!”

 

And it’s like, that’s not the case. Where I’m sitting on Wellington Street, I think there’s 350 trucks. And last weekend, or the weekend we got here, the RCMP flew over and took a picture, and they estimated there’s 2.4 million people. And I was up there. And it was shoulder to shoulder like you couldn’t move! And it was pleasant.

 

People were singing ‘Oh, Canada’, and there’s kids, and families! But if you watch it on the mainstream media, it’s like we’re burning the place down, or we’re robbing the homeless! And it’s so far from the truth, it’s not even close.

 

Freddie Sayers: So what is everyone doing there? Describe the scene. So everyone’s in their truck, your stationary, you’ve parked up, you’re not moving around.

 

Tim: No, we’re parked.

 

Freddie Sayers: And is everyone getting together and protesting?

 

Tim: Oh yeah!

 

Freddie Sayers: Or is everyone just sitting in their trucks? What’s the atmosphere?

 

Tim: No, no! I mean, you can’t even call it a protest. It’s more like a Canada, Day celebration. There’s no chants, … I mean, there’s chants, like yeah:

 

“We believe that we will win.”

 

And people singing “Oh, Canada”..

 

But it doesn’t look like a protest. No one’s wrecking anything. People are out visiting. People stop by all the time. It’s kind of like a big party. But it’s not, you know what I mean?

 

Freddie Sayers: So has the city ground to a halt, then? Is any normal business taking place? Or is the city been pretty much shut down?

 

Tim: I couldn’t answer that. Because I don’t really know. I know, like Wellington Street here. There’s nobody driving down it. Like it’s blocked off. There’s an emergency lane for people to get by.

 

But there’s no rural traffic going by. Like one bank shut down here last week, because it was just too noisy. They were honking horns and stuff like that, during the day.

 

Now they put an injunction on us and we can’t honk our horns for 10 days. Well, as soon as they did that, then the horns honked for about an hour straight. The Mayor and the Chief of Police, every time they try to do something, it kind of backfires on them.

 

But there’s been no violence at all, like none.

Freddie Sayers: So, how long would you be prepared to stay there for?

 

Tim: I was prepared to stay here until all the mandates across Canada were lifted, like all of them. But now, if they actually bring in the riot police, tomorrow, or Friday. And they’re going to arrest us and seize our trucks, I can’t afford to lose my truck! It’s how I make my living.

 

Freddie Sayers: Why do you think it’s the truckers that are objecting to it? What is it about that group that has made them lead this protest?

 

Tim: I think what got them started was – I mean, I don’t run to the States anymore, I pretty much local Alberta – but the guys that do go to the States, when it’s got rolling, if they’re not vaxxed, when they come back from California, bringing a load of produce, they have to quarantine for 14 days when they get home.

 

Well, who can do on one load? So you’re going to get two loads a month! Like? You’re not going to make it. And we’re basically quarantined in our trucks anyway.

 

Freddie Sayers: So, how much of the blame do you lay at Justin Trudeau’s door? Is it his fault, do you think? Or is this a wider problem?

 

Tim: It’s not all his fault. I blame it on all the parties. Because I don’t believe that, … They’re all crooked! Like Conservative, Liberal Bloc, NDP. They’re all in it for a paycheck! That’s what I think. And they think that we work for them. It’s like, no, no! You guys work for us! Don’t forget that!

 

But they get the big high price paycheck every year. And they’ll say whatever they can to keep that paycheck. And as soon as the elections are done, then it’s like:

 

“Maybe I didn’t mean that. But thanks for voting for me anyway.”

 

And that’s across all of the parties! It’s not just Liberal.

 

Freddie Sayers: I just heard that Alberta has lifted the vaccine passports. Is that something we should be celebrating?

 

Tim: That happened yesterday. They lifted the vaccine passport. It’s a good start.

 

Freddie Sayers: Do you think that’s because of your efforts?

 

Tim: Ah, maybe, some? They’re making it out to be like it’s not. It’s like, well, they’re saying:

 

“Well, the Omicron thing is now so mild, that we’re going to start lifting them.”

 

But I think if these guys hadn’t had started this convoy, they wouldn’t have done it! Because it’s basically shut the country down. There’s 150,000 trucks in the Ottawa area, that aren’t working every day. And that’s a big effect on the economy.

 

And the thing I heard here now is that if they actually chase us out of here, we’re going to go home and park our trucks! Like they can get us out of here. But they can’t make me go to work.

 

And if they got 300,000 trucks in Canada, that are parked in their driveway that will not go to work, it’s going to cause a lot of trouble.

 

Freddie Sayers: What will make this end for you? That’s the question, I think. Let’s just say that the COVID thing does gradually fade away and the mandates are lifted, will that be over for you? Do you feel like you will be back to normal? Or do you feel this has started a new movement that is going to carry on?

 

Tim: No, I think that if the mandates are all lifted. I think that’s pretty much what everybody’s looking for. But we do have to get some people in government that are telling the truth about everything. Because as far as I can see, they spew a lot of non-truths on about what’s going on. And they got to get that handled.

 

The biggest thing for me is the mandates and, the vaccine. Like I’ll never take the vaccine now, because of all the, … [reponding to someone outside the truck] Thank you very much!

 

Sure, people come steady with Tim Hortons cards and, stickers, and kids come with Ziploc bags with little notes rolled in them, and cookies, and people bring sandwiches. And it’s pretty steady. When it’s busy on the weekends, I might as well not even close the door in my truck, because they come steady all the time.

 

And I’ve probably got 200 notes from kids that they’ve colored pictures of trucks. And it’s like:

 

“Thanks for coming! We can’t go to birthday parties, and we can’t go play hockey. And, my mom is depressed, because she had to quit her job. Because the daycares are closed!”

It’s the whole thing – it’s not right. And these little kids, and my grandkids, they’re missing, so far, two years of a normal life. But you have a kid that’s in kindergarten, grade one, grade two, they’ve been sticking a mask on their face for two years! They think that’s normal! Well that isn’t normal! Not in Canada, it ain’t normal.

 

When Pfizer tells us that they don’t want to tell us what’s in the vaccine for like 55 years. It’s like:

 

“Well, then maybe I’ll take it in 55 years, how about that! Like when you tell me what’s in it, I’ll take it. Until then you’re not sticking it in my arm. Period! I don’t care!”

 

That should be my choice. That shouldn’t be the government telling me I have to do it, or I can’t go get on a plane and go to Mexico, or Australia, for a holiday.

 

You know, I worked my whole life and it’s only been the last five years that I’m far enough ahead that I can take two weeks off in the winter, and go and lay on the beach in Cabo, Mexico. I should be there right now! Like right now, I should be in Cabo laying on the beach, because we always go in the first two weeks of February.

 

Instead, I’m going to go lay in the snow over here one of these days and send a picture home to my wife, and say:

 

“Well, it’s not quite Cabo, but, at least I’m on some kind of a holiday!”

 

Freddie Sayers: We were happy that you took the time to talk to us anyway? I’m sorry it wasn’t on a beach. But hopefully you’ll get there sometime soon.

 

Tim: Yeah! I’m really hoping I get there, next year maybe.

 

Freddie Sayers: Okay. Thank you so much, Tim.

 

Tim: Yeah, you bet. Thanks a lot. Have a good day.

 

Freddie Sayers: Well, after sitting for two weeks in that truck, I think Tim deserves a holiday. So let’s hope he gets one.

Exactly why we canceled our newspaper subscription summer of 2020. They only ever ran one side of the story. They never once even mentioned scientists, etc, who were questioning lockdowns and alternative treatments. We refuse to PAY for propaganda.

@Tree Frog So what is your solution? I think the message that the truckers are sending to the pieces of sh*t that control of this world is that there are more of us than them. Them is never going to stop, ever, and I think the actions of the truckers could very well inspire the rest of us out here to get creative and come up with more ideas on how to protest against these filthy slimeballs. I had my own personal victory this past week regarding mask requirements because I stood up to a Libtard tyrant and hurt her where it really counts, in the pocket book. It’s a rare case, but we ALL NEED TO PRACTICE NONCOMPLIANCE TO THESE TYRANTS as much as possible. We are not dealing with decent people in this situation. I don’t even like to use the word people when referring to these things. No, I’m going entering into reptilian land. What do you suggest we do? I think we the people need to target all of our local fakestream media outlets. I boycotted them years ago, and of course, they’ve taken over and now dominate Youtube.

I live in Vancouver and every Saturday there’s a protest downtown and it’s almost like a party. Everyone is upbeat and happy and the cops are relaxed and chill. It’s a very positive atmosphere. The counter protesters are outnumbered about 100-1 and those people are treated with respect as well. Zero fights, zero incidents. For the numbers of people involved, it’s been amazingly calm and peaceful. If there were incidents, for DAMN sure the media would’ve been all over them……unless it’s ANTIFA. In Winnipeg and ANTIFA member ran down 4 protesters and the media has basically ignored it. The media coverage here is literally beyond belief. I ask all my friends to not take my word for it, but come down to an event and see for themselves.

Thank you for covering this. As a Canadian it has been embarrassing to be a citizen with this level of authoritarianism. But it may all have driven this, which hopefully will turn the world around. It is the working class vs. the elite, and IF there is a sinister group watching, they are watching with close eyes. Resistance from the “friendliest” citizens in the world, who aren’t armed, should show those that the numbers are in our favour, and you can’t control us. Starting to be a proud Canadian, again.

Unfortunately that is not 100% true. The lawyers and judges support this initiative as well. All Canadian federal government employees must get the vaccine by law. This law was allowed to pass into the Canadian labor code in December 2021. I don’t think this has been challenged in court yet. My suspicion is most judges would throw it out.

I went to Ottawa last weekend… drove 6 hours and it was minus 25C. It was fantastic and much larger than I thought. There were so many Canadian flags it reminded me of Canada day. The city itself is open and functioning pretty well normally. Only street completely shut down is Wellington st in front of parliament. It was festive, street parties at night replete with fires and bouncey castles for the kids. If you can, drive up and have a look for yourself and support these people. BTW… anyone that does a protest when it’s around Minus 25 isnt going to be afraid of anything. Trudeau must step down… he has lost the confidence of those he supposedly governs.

As an Albertans and a Canadian, I can say that the gentleman interviewed typifies the perspective in rural Alberta. Yes, not particularly sophisticated … but honest, hard-working, family-oriented, and very proud to be a Canadian. Yet these are precisely the people that Justin Trudeau (Canada’s Zoolander of ‘inclusiveness’ and every imaginable woke cause) has demonized as racists, as misogynists, as Nazi’s … and Canada’s left-leaning (and directly federal-gov’t subsidized) media parrots the same skewed message. I’d add that Canada is an intensely parochial country where regional division is par-for-the-course. But this protest is different … it is unique … a first as it spans every region & province in Canada. History will not be kind to Justin Trudeau.

The spending was not an issue, that is just energy transfer, it is how it was spent, where the energy went and how it predominantly went to big tech and big business universally. In Australia our state funded ABC used to be the best but the Howard government changed the laws so the Murdoch press could own almost all the printing press and more. This “conservative” government continued to strangle the ABC of funding and right to autonomy while the Murdoch press set the tone and parameters of public debate with its print media monopoly. So now we don’t have any main steam press in the public interest but we do have some good small independent media. The New Matilda is probably some of the best. John Pilger is always spot too.

Good on you, Freddie. You couldn’t have found a more genuine example of a Canadian than Tim the trucker, from Rosemary, Alberta. The guy drove across Canada burning fuel at his expense and is parked in downtown Ottawa, not making a penny of income. All he wants is to have the mandates lifted and to allow people to have the choice of whether or not to be vaccinated. No ulterior motive, no Swastikas or Confederate flags; just a working guy with dirt under his nails. Meanwhile the politicians continue to feign concern for the “unwashed.” And the Laptop Class never misses a day’s pay. And I like his suggestion that if they’re going to bring the riot police to bust some heads and seize vehicles then the drivers will just park their rigs in their driveways. Imagine how inconvenient it will be if 200,000 truckers “catch” Covid. Afterall, they’ll just be taking a page out of Trudeau’s playbook. Bravo to these folks and all that are supporting them.

Who can listen to the trucker and honestly say that he’s unreasonable? Perfect healthy Canadians without a criminal record are barred from flying internationally * or domestically *, because why? I love your channel. I’m very glad you covered this. I’m Canadian and in my province you can’t even go in a clothing store or hardware store if you aren’t vaccinated. I had to get vaxxed to keep my job but my boyfriend and brother aren’t. It’s winter and they can’t go buy a new coat or boots or fix a leaky roof or window. These mandates must stop. 90% are vaccinated; it should be enough. This convoy situation has shown us how mainstream media lies, distort and modifies the trurth in Canada. And our Prime Minister continues to push people to HATE the unvaxxed. This is a very horrible. i’m looking into moving somewhere else at this point.

I’m Cdn. and the other aspect of this that gets little coverage with mainstream news is that due to Canada requiring a VP to enter and the US making a reciprocal requirement, unvaccinated Canadians are basically now prisoners (so to speak) here. This is because unless you have a Vaccine Passport, you cannot get on a plane (national or international), train, bus or ship to leave the country….unless you’re wealthy, have your own private jet or can hire one to take you to a country where the VP isn’t required. As a result of this another note so widely known fact is that these “rules” have made it unconstitutional under the Cdn. Charter of Rights and Freedoms and a lawsuit against the Federal Gov. has recently been filed. I’m vaccinated but find the treatment of the unvaccinated by our politicians and others to be extremely disturbing. I believe Justin Trudeau referred to them as being similar to racists and misogynists as just a couple of examples!

I’m Canadian and I can honestly say I’ve never seen anything like this in our country. People are pissed off. Many got vaccinated (like myself) and restrictions remained. We were locked down after being told it wouldn’t happen again post-vaccination. The Quebec government ordered people to stay in their homes after 10pm or else they’d be fined. A lot of horrible abuses of government power have taken place in Canada. I truly hope some of the politicians and officials responsible come up on charges of human rights abuse. I’m not sure the world really knows what has happened here, but they know more now 🇨🇦

Thank you for covering this. I was there for the first day (in the frigid cold), it was completely peaceful and respectful. As an unvaccinated Quebecoise (in excellent health as I am an athlete), I can no longer go anywhere or do anything. Cannot take my dog to the vet, no shopping no outings no nothing. The worst are the headlines like “What should we do about The Unvaccinated? How long can we tolerate The Unvaccinated? “Claiming we are stupid selfish people who want the freedom to harm others, or are overunning the hospitals. The vibe is, frankly, terrifying. Our government and media have caused this. It’s breaking apart families and friends, causing more damage to mental health and economic problems on top of all the damage from the past 2 years. Thanks for the coverage. I was there last weekend and it was exactly the great vibe that Tim described. The other thing I kept hearing is that people are no longer going to stand by as the government divides people and pits them against each other. There was a big call for unity.

We need to listen to the concerns of all Canadians and respect each other’s feelings and opinions. Unfortunately our politicians have not done enough of that, but instead have politicized the pandemic and too many have been partisan and self serving in their actions and messaging. Of course this has further fuelled frustration and anger in a population already suffering so much. I personally do not agree with the actions of the “truckers” (there are not only truckers involved.) though I respect every citizen’s right to protest. I think it would have been only fair to interview some truckers (most are vaccinated and working btw) and others who have different views
and experiences to Tim’s, no? Does this have to be so polarized? For a more moderate; thoughtful and reasoned view from a Liberal no less (I’m not a Liberal) listen to Liberal MP Joel Lightbound’s press conference in which he raises his concerns with how his party has been handling the pandemic. He has been applauded from across the political spectrum for showing some badly needed compassion and thoughtfulness on these issues. Not surprisingly his comments have been subject to appropriation so it’s important to go to the source. The full press conference can be found on CPAC (Cable Public Affairs Channel).

I live in Ottawa and I have a much different opinion on the trucker occupation than your interviewer. While the majority of the truckers are reasonable there is an extremist fringe that the organizers could not control. They parked dozens of trucks not just on empty government streets but on local residential streets, blocked driveways, and started honking horns all night. The families living there could not sleep, and the police did nothing about it. I heard it was so bad that some people had to move out temporarily to hotels and friends to be able to sleep. Your interviewer says she lives three kilometers away and heard no honking, but I live about ten kilometers away from downtown and heard the truckers in the morning through my closed window. To their credit the demonstration organizers did try to stop the honking at night, but they could not. Only about a week later when a local resident, not the city of Ottawa, convinced a judge to grant an injunction against the all-night noise did it stop.
The truckers also harassed workers at a downtown homeless shelter, dozens of them forced their way into a local plaza without masks leading to the closure of the plaza, the 911 system in Ottawa was flooded with many bogus calls (probably by US supporters), and finally they blocked traffic for a few hours at the local airport. Each of these claims are not just publicity statements as this interviewer claimed, they are verifiable facts that people are willing to swear to under oath in a court of law. The truckers’ actions in Ottawa are mostly for the world-wide publicity they gain for their cause. The real economic damage is being done at the closed border crossings.
Most people in Canada do not care if the vaccine mandates are not enforced on the remaining ten percent unvaccinated, like the truckers. But even in Alberta which has lifted almost all restrictions, the truckers will not stop their border blockade in that province. The truckers say they will leave Ottawa only when all Covid restrictions in all of Canada are lifted. However, most such restrictions are provincial, not federal (Ottawa) and what they do here has no influence on the provinces outside of western Canada. They have structured their demands knowing that they will not be met.
The incompetence of the Ottawa police chief led to this situation. In no other Canadian city did the police allow hundreds of trucks into their downtown core, and in no other city did a trucker demonstration turn into a multi-week occupation. The truckers are slowly spinning out of control, and when our vacillating police force or the army finally take action a horde of international web sites like yours will cry foul without really having any idea of why this is happening.
Yes, many people in Canada are frustrated by Covid restrictions and all level of governments should present a clear plan on removing their Covid restrictions. But there are some special things about Canadian law enforcement that make such actions as the trucker occupations easier. The primary goal of all the police forces in Canada is not to enforce the law. Instead, it is about enforcing the law only if this does not lead to a violent confrontation with people who are demonstrating for a cause. The police bend over backwards to avoid any violent confrontation with demonstrators of more than a few dozen people. It was the same situation in the native inspired blockades a few years ago. In Ottawa the police are especially tolerant because of the many demonstrations that take place in the capital.
Yes, Trudeau has made this situation worse by refusing to meet with the truckers, when by contrast he did meet with the natives when they made similar blockades a few years ago. Yesterday the leader of the Conservative opposition who has supported the truckers in the past said for the first time that they should leave Ottawa. When their friends say this then the truckers should listen.

Your trust in Jesus and what He did for you on the cross, is what saves you.
The moment you trust in Jesus and only Jesus, you are saved.
After people get saved they get baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
It is for believers only and has nothing to do with your salvation.

He hauls cattles for a living, a 3 day drive…. He has no problem with exploiting the poor cattle famished, and frozen on the roads of Canada? When they reach the slaughterhouses many are dead and others can barely stand so they are hit heavily to unload them.

I think she was talking the about the truckers on this demonstration, where by a process of self selection, most are likely to be unvaccinated. She was not talking about all the Canadian truckers.
