Being Called a Racist

Fri, May 14, 1971

[Enoch Powell is interviewed by Dick Cavett in London in 1971 and responds to being called a “racist”, in which he says that is just a term of abuse. He explains the origin of the non-White immigrant problem developing in Britain and how it must be dealt with, otherwise:

… large parts of many of our cities will by the beginning of the next century be occupied by a population which has nothing in common with the people of this country!

Dick Cavett: New Littergreen. The patented cat box filler with natural chlorophyll, controls odor and absorbs like a sponge. I’m allowing a decent interval to pass so we can now talk. [audience laughs]

Well, I guess the the immigration issue was the thing, as you know, that changed your life and made your name probably better known throughout the world than it had been before that. And when you made a speech, as a result of which you were called a racist by many of your own papers and many in the States who reported it. And it’s easy to see reading the speech, why you could be called that. Do you understand why people call you a racist?

Enoch Powell: It is one of the modern terms of abuse! And the term of abuse is the more effective, the less defined it is. Then you can throw it at anybody and anything.

But I find this word “race” very irrelevant in the British context. Indeed, it’s rather a word which we’ve borrowed from America, because in the States, the term race simply means Negro or non-Negro.

Now, that, of course, is the form in which this sort of conflict or potential conflict primarily presents itself in the United States. But that’s a very different background, a very different origin from the problem which we have here.

I wonder if you’d allow me a minute or two to sketch in the background here in Britain, because it is unique in the world and one gets it wrong if one imports ideas from anywhere else.

You’ve got to go back to the fact that alone, of all the countries in the world, we never had a definition of ourselves. There was never such a thing as a “United Kingdom citizen”, unlike the United States, which has its own citizenship, France, Germany, we never had that. We were British subjects. We were subjects of the King or the Queen, as the case might be.

Consequently, as the British Dominions expanded automatically, everybody was born in or belonged to any part of the British Dominions. Hundreds of millions of human beings were all British subjects. And in the law of this country, there was never any distinction between one British subject and another. There was no way of labeling the British subject who, if I may use the word, “belonged” to this country.

Now, this had many advantages when Britain was the centre of an empire. And if the numbers from the rest of the Empire who availed themselves of this identification remained small, then no problem arose.

But the rest of the Empire had its own citizenships. An Englishman wasn’t allowed to go and settle in India or Jamaica.

On the contrary, they had their own very strict demarcations and definitions.

And now, after the Second World War, there was a big technical revolution that took place, and that was air travel, which made the movement of masses of people from one continent to another possible on a scale which had never been contemplated before.

As a result of that, there moved into the United Kingdom growing numbers of British subjects from the rest of the, well, it was by now the Commonwealth – it ceased to be the Empire –who had no other connection than that with this country, with the United Kingdom.

Now, it wasn’t that this was asked for, it wasn’t that these people were brought in as labour, like the movement of labour on the Continent. It happened because without a major change in our law it couldn’t be prevented. Indeed, it couldn’t be seen!

You see, we actually don’t know how many came in, because if they’re all British subjects, you only counted, well, you didn’t count British subjects. And a Hong Kong Chinese, or a Pathan from the Northwest Frontier, or myself coming back from a weekend in Paris, we were all the same going through the port of entry, or Heathrow airport.

Well, eventually reality breaks through! And in 1962, at last, the law was changed so as to make a difference between the British subjects who belong to this country and those who don’t.

But by the time that that had happened – I’m simplifying – so large a number had already settled here, plus the inflow in the years after 1962, for reasons which I won’t enter into they are complicated, that we now know that unless some drastic change happens large parts of many of our cities will by the beginning of the next century be occupied by a population which has nothing in common with the people of this country!

Now, I’ve defined the problem.

Dick Cavett: Yes, that all sounds reasonable. I think the, …

Enoch Powell: It is reasonable, you know.

Dick Cavett: Ah, … [audience laughs] It also sounds reasonable.

The thing is that I think in reading the speech it’s obvious that many of the examples that you chose to illustrate the problem were much more pungent, if you’ll pardon the expression. You talked about a lady in a small town, …

Enoch Powell: Yes, indeed, …

Dick Cavett: Who had excrement shoved through her letter box, …

Enoch Powell: Yes, that’s right.

Dick Cavett: … By black people.

Enoch Powell: Now we must here have the context of that speech.

Dick Cavett: Yeah.

Enoch Powell: That speech was made two, three days, before the Conservative opposition had decided to oppose a race relations bill. And the reason that we were going to oppose it was that it would do more harm than good!

And it would do more harm than good because the danger to race relations basically was the fear of the indigenous population, of the growing numbers and growing influx of immigrants. And it was that fear which was the reason why that Bill we believed, and all believed, would do more harm than good.

That as the Member representing one of the places primarily affected, I set out to illustrate and to explain to parts of the country that had no knowledge of it, in that speech.

So that’s the context of that speech. I was making that speech against a Bill which the Conservative Party as a whole opposed. And I was saying it isn’t really the danger lies not so much in discrimination against the immigrant, it lies in the fear which increasing numbers inspire in the minds – and not surprisingly and not unnaturally – of the population here. That was the message.

Dick Cavett: But do you still have any question in your mind as to what in the speech caused such manifestations afterwards, as:

“If you want a nigger for a neighbour vote Labour!”

Enoch Powell: No! No! That phrase was used long before and was never used in connection with my speech. That phrase dates back to the 1964 election, if not earlier.

But, of course, there was a terrific explosion of relief that at last somebody had drawn attention! Not, we now know, to the full dimensions. For I underestimated the numbers in that speech. But it generates to what were then thought to be the full dimensions of the problem.

And people who had watched year after year, particularly in the areas concerned, something happening which was altering their lives, but nobody apparently caring, nobody referring to it, nobody worrying about it.

Dick Cavett: Perhaps they can find, …

Enoch Powell: But at last, at least somebody’s spoken about it! Now we can face it!

[audience applause]

The most intelligent, honest and far sighted politician that ever lived and everything that he foretold has come to pass!
” Every city populated will in the future be populated by people that have no infinity with British Culture” Never a truer word said.
Lay the blame where it began – with the Labour Party and there ” Commonwealth Act ” passed through parliament with NO public consultation or referendum . Result, cities that have become ghettos, no go areas, crime of every sort, kind and description.
R.I.P Enoch Powell, a man that envisioned it all playing out, and that is exactly what we have today – a country that is all played out

This was the beauty of those times when people allowed each other to have ample time to explain and express. Nothing was hurried neither anger nor hostility. A debate seemed to be an exchange of vocal dictation and informative expressions between two competitors. People carried personalities that captured the space of discussions. One can understand how the 70s became a period of expression. We allowed ourselves the zone and time to fully express each other, and the result was the myriad of inventions across technology, arts and crafts, etc.

Bizarre as it may seem to some, but if you could extract Enoch Powell from history, bring him forward to the modern day and put him in the UK, he’d be stunned. Not even he predicted it would get as bad as it has.
Enoch was wrong, but not in warning of what was to come, but in hugely underestimating it.

Enoch Powell knew where the world was going and called it as he saw it,he was one of England’s most intelligent, eloquent and pragmatic politicians, well said Sir.The term racist is a term that has become weaponized and used as an insult in a derogatory way and a term that many using it have no idea of what it actually means there is a fine line between being labelled a racist or a patriot and the left wing love to blur those lines.

What a brilliant articulate and learned man Enoch Powel was. A realist, a visionary….. but not a racist! He foresaw what would happen to the Cities and the population in the United Kingdom and his prophecies were born on fact not the discrimination or hatred as he was so often accused. All that he warned of has rang true. A brilliant man and a superb politician the likes of which are sadly missed in the present sea of self serving so called ‘politicians.’

Enoch Powell was before my time. Although he died after I was born, his prominence was prior to my birth. However, I recall hearing about him in my teens. For one reason or another, though mainly as many people smeared him, I never bothered to listen to what he had said. I suppose I should have known from my own experience of being smeared as things I’m not for having different opinions to the current orthodoxy, that Enoch Powell was worth listening to (even though long after he made his speeches and these interviews, before my time). Not only is what he said very accurate, he’s very listenable due to his clarity of thought and eloquence of speech. Whether you agree with him or not, the man was an intellectual heavy weight, far too bright to be the knuckle dragging bigot many people labelled him to be.

Imagine a talk show host who actually allows someone to explain themselves, to espouse their thoughts and beliefs, whether popular or not, and then ask questions that people on both sides of the issues would probably want to ask themselves. The cancel culture in American society today has all but ensured that interviews like this will never be allowed to happen in the future. Show hosts are nothing more than cheerleaders for their point of view, and they exist only to foist their opinions on their audience who clap and cheer them along. Our intolerance for the opposing point of view is making us more stupid by the day, and it will ultimately be one of things that leads us to our decline and destruction.

One of the biggest enemy of British people are the British people themselves, especially the ones that consider themselves liberal and rich enough to live in areas of the country where they won’t be affected by mass immigration from 3rd world, they are also the ones that make decisions for everyone else. It is sad to see the state of Britain today and most of the western world. I reckon in the next 20-30 years in Europe white indigenous people will be minority in their own countries. Such an interesting interview. Let’s say that three major cities in China become inhabited almost entirely by Americans…Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou…those cities are now seen as no go areas for Chinese…they are inhabited by Americans who have their own language and culture. And they have no desire to learn Mandarin. How would China react to that? Let’s say that in the US….Boston, Dallas and New York are now inhabited almost entirely by Muslims from Somalia or Pakistan….how would that be for you guys….thumbs up? Everything good here, no problem. Wait…there’s a problem….oh…that’s racism….And yet…this man was talking about just such a situation as it actually manifested in the UK. And now in the UK we have just this situation, entire cities in the UK are now made up of immigrants that have no desire to be British…indeed they don’t even want to speak our language. Wow….what genius civil servant or parliamentarian thought up that incredible scenario…and we the public have absolutely no say in it….we just have to accept it because otherwise would be seen as racism.

What a brilliant mind this man had. His vision & realism has come to fruition. He was never a racist or held racist views
, he only spoke the truth & foretold what the consequences would be if the government at the time didn’t grasp the situation and monitor the influx of immigrants. He was also correct in his predictions that the indigenous population would become the minority in certain areas within the major cities ultimately forcing them to move away from the area altogether. Unfortunately it’s far too late to undo or improve so we have to live with it.

As Health Minister during 1960 to 1963 Enoch Powell invited West Indian nurses to come and work for the National Health Service in Britain. By 1968, however, he delivered his famous “Rivers of Blood” speech, criticising mass immigration and the proposed 1968 Race Relations Bill which sought to end discrimination based on grounds of ethnicity and national origins. This also coincided with the 1968 Commonwealth Immigration Act which sought to restrict further the entry of citizens from Commonwealth countries.

Freedom of speech has diminished so much over 40 years. Whether you agree or disagree with his views
, you can listen to what he has to say and form your own opinion. Now media interviewers are so quick to be offended, and will interrupt, cancel and shut down anyone who doesn’t adhere to wokery.

I have come to make a general distinction when it comes to politicians. The ones who divide us and the ones who bring us together. Human diversity, diversity of culture, insight and skills and norms can result in great wealth for a country. The capacity for empathy, cooperation, creativity and hard work is what always lead us forward.

If only the people had listened…. If only the people in Luton or Bradford to name but a few of our towns had listened, his Speech was not about racism, but more about our towns losing their identities and the fight to get them back….. Fast forward and here we are doing exactly that…. And just to add what a fantastic chat show host, who even with his awkward comedic edge genuinely listened and allowed the guest to answer with our interruption. I honestly can’t think of such a host today.

On crime? We do actually have a right to say, this is enough. We don’t have to feel guilty about demanding order and control. After all, that’s the same reason these people come here in the first place but our patience has a limit.

I wonder what Powell would say when if he were to see Rishi Sunak, Sajid Javed and Nadhim Zahawi contending for the Conservative Leadership. What he essentially failed to understand or communicate rather, is the fact that to live, thrive and participate in British national life, you don’t really need to belong to a certain set of cultural values. Rather you just have to be the “British Subject”- loyal to the Crown. Because the UK is a monarchy where citizenship or identity stems from loyalty to the Crown rather than to a ethnocentric tradition.

This is a man whose main political ambition was to be the Viceroy of India and he was devastated when the government decided to grant independence to that country. He wanted to exercise control and rule over hundreds of millions of people to whom he had no connection, other than they were “British subjects”. One shudders at the hypocrisy, something which most people miss when they try to excuse his racist behavior.

All those stories about the woman in Wolverhampton were true. The misrepresentation akin to the 1980’s UK riots being depicted as the result of police racism; the reality being that it was the attempt by the UK police force to control the illegal drug trade, which has since turned the UK into a Narco-state, which led to a riotous criminal backlash. Drug addiction has now reduced many ‘working class’ communities in the UK to mediaeval squalor – and still it grows unchecked.

In London now, if you stroll through the crowds on a bright Sunday afternoon near the museums and decorated shop fronts, even for those of us who have been here for years, this multiracial metropolis – less frantic than New York, and with more purpose than Paris, and with its scores of languages – seems like nothing that has ever been made before. And it grows ever more busy, bustling and compelling in its beauty, multiplicity and promise, particularly for those of us who remember how dull and eventless London could seem in the 70s, especially on Sundays.
Britain survived Powell and became something he couldn’t possibly have envisioned. He was a pessimist and lacked faith in the ability of people to cooperate with one another, to collaborate and make alliances. The cultural collisions he was afraid of are the affirmative side of globalisation. People do not love one another because they are ‘the same’, and they don’t always kill one another because they are different. Where, indeed, does difference begin? Why would it begin with race or colour?
Racism is the lowest form of snobbery. Its language mutates: not long ago the word ‘immigrant’ became an insult, a stand-in for ‘p*ki’ or ‘n*gger’. We remain an obstruction to ‘unity’, and people like Powell, men of ressentiment, with their omens and desire to humiliate, will return repeatedly to divide and create difference. The neoliberal experiment that began in the 80s uses racism as a vicious entertainment, as a sideshow, while the wealthy continue to accumulate. But we are all migrants from somewhere, and if we remember that, we could all go somewhere – together.

Enoch Powell was the ‘chief’ politician where I lived, Wolverhampton, my home town in the 60’s/70’s. In fact he resided just down the road from my family. He was an extremely intelligent, erudite and eloquent gentleman as one can see here. Often misunderstood, sometimes wilfully so, his discourse and demeanor was unrivalled. Wolverhampton has always been a multi cultural society, and everyone always got on well with one another. As always the media played their part well, ignoring the facts and compounding perceived strife. Alas, nothing changes here.

The crux of the issue of immigrants entering one’s country is did they pledged an oath to uphold and defend the laws and ideas of their new home nation, or are they just residing and seeking to make their former culture and nation’s laws integrated with the one they came too?
I’m not talking about if they eat, dress, talk, or celebrate their native holidays. I’m talking about will they stand up and support the Western ideas, and leave behind the ones that made their country miserable, and led them to leave? If they came from a country that supported communism, caste systems, treating women as chattel to be abused, etc. then they better abandon those things and get on with living according to the ideas of the nation they emigrated to.

If he was here now people he could absolutely say I told you so!!!

@BoomsRiddico4868
I agree he was right about cities being populated with people who have nothing in common, BUT if Britain hadn’t imposed, conquered, colonised all those nations and killed of languages and culture then those peoples wouldn’t be needing to come to Britain to find prosperity from what was taken from them.
Take the very simple example of Ireland; a once forest nation was left almost treeless by British who logged all of Irelands trees to built grand halls in Windsor castle and make boats for the British naval. They also killed of the language by making it prohibited to speak and plundered livestock and vegetation to feed starving Britons.
He doesn’t talk about THAT does he??

Remember that this guy was a professor by the age of 25 he could fluently speak many languages including Urdu, he was literally a walking brain! And while many in racist groups always try and identify with Enoch Powell, he would definitely NOT identify with them! What he is trying to explain is the reaction and fear and consequential problems ahead not necessarily what is right to think or believe, he had no personal disdain or racial hatred, that simply wasn’t the point which unfortunately was perceived that way. And listen to the way he speaks, not a plum in the mouth, just a clear and concise eloquent British accent of a bygone era that we sadly never hear anything of the like today!

Enoch Powell on how all discussion and debate on mass migration was closed down:
“Our danger is that the enemy has mastered the art of establishing a moral ascendancy over his victims and destroying their good conscience . . . Have you ever wondered, perhaps, why opinions which the majority of people quite naturally hold are, if anyone dares express them publicly, denounced as ‘controversial’, ‘extremist’, ‘explosive’, ‘disgraceful’, and overwhelmed with a violence and venom quite unknown to debate on mere political issues? It is because the whole power of the aggressor depends upon preventing people from seeing what is happening and from saying what they see. The most perfect, and the most dangerous, example of this process is the subject miscalled, and deliberately miscalled, ‘race’. The people of this country are told that they must feel neither alarm nor objection to a West Indian, African and Asian population which will rise to several millions, being introduced into this country. If they do, they are ‘prejudiced’, ‘racialist’, ‘unChristian’ and ‘failing to show an example to the rest of the world’ . . . It is even heresy to assert the plain fact that the English are a White nation.114” (from “Enoch Powell: Politics and Ideas in Modern Britain” by Paul Corthorn)

. People no matter where they are based in do have the right to think that their country remains in a traditional way as much as possible. London for example has changed drastically since the 50s/60s and because the local English people were never asked if they wanted a drastic change they have the right to say that they cant recognise their city anymore.. i mentioned London because i live in it but i could have mentioned any big cities or towns. People were NEVER asked if they wanted their country to become sooo “diverse”. Someone else decided and the politicians back then and now simply follow orders.

I feel us Brits are not xenophobic, but immigration has to be controlled and add value to the host society. It should not undermine or take precedence over the cultural values and identity of the host. In the U.K. it’s seemed some elements, including big business and the BBC, do not subscribe to these principles. It sounds petty, but if you arrived in the U.K. from another country and switched on the TV, the adverts would suggest the demographics of this country are very different to what they actually are. It’s interesting how we have arrived at this point and where it will take us.

It’s sad to see in our day the very truth of things being shut down. We are no longer allowed to speak our minds. How have the mighty fallen! What a country we used to be. But like every great empire, we have become eventually, through luxury and excess, and the turning away from God, a degenerate and hardened people. Having in the past been diligent in keeping out anyone who would lower our righteous and excellent status as a Christian nation, they are now pouring in, thus showing that we have become dross who were once Gold.

@VlerkeDamne

The question I always ask myself is why ‘western’ countries/continents (USA, Canada, Europe,…) scolded for not wanting a complete influx of immigrants and therefore a forced shift in demographics? Ask yourself this question, wherever you’re from. Flip it around. Imagine people from the USA would start mass migrating to your country. Would you mind? Would you care that every second shop in your town is being operated by a foreign person who doesn’t speak the language properly, has a different religion and complete different manners, beliefs and culture? Would you enjoy hearing American English constantly around you walking to your job? The construction of churches to accommodate the Christian religion in between your own temples, mosques, synagogues,.. . The construction of massive football pitches to accommodate for their sports and where all these US immigrants would gather? Not wearing the same religious head wear or clothing in class as all your classmates who have worn certain outfits for centuries? In small amounts it can be interesting and educational. But there are limits.

What was and still is stupid but especially all those years ago is that when people were invited to britain, there should have been full integration into being British. What our culture language customs and values were at that time and encouragement of British people to assist in this and not be fearful. On the other side of the coin, support and integration, education lessons and joining in the community formal citizenship and real pride in both camps in Britain each other and making prosperity for all. It imo all went wrong right at the very beginning. Same thing now, nations resent new people because those incoming people tend to if there are ma y of them, to gravitate to each other and form their own communities, they don’t integrate and people resent that. I looked at this from every angle but people from different cultures do change a traditional area. If something could be done to solve this I think people would get along better

If he was really smart he’d have realised that if, as he says, “we never had a definition of ourselves”, then we can’t argue that some people do and some people don’t belong in the UK, other than by reference to immigration laws. The fact he never realised this reflects how blinded he was by his racism and the racism of his constituents. He was in fact retrospectively attempting to apply that which he admits has never existed, a definition of what it is to be British.

Racism in the 20th century is an interesting story. Started with basic assumptions about intrinsic differences between the races. Then the notion that all races are of equal qualities but differ only in upbringing. And so the age of Civil Rights dawned, a noble quest to even the playing field.
But the movement became toxic, leading to racist policies like Affirmative Action. And after decades, little to no progress had been made in most minority demographics. IQ tests were not encouraging either. The substantial IQ gap between the races had not budged.
We’re now in the process of learning that this Great Experiment of Social Justice was doomed to fail from the beginning. And ironically, sentiments are starting to resemble those at the start of the 20th century, but arriving there based on experience and data, not just prejudice.
If European nations are to have a chance at survival, they must remain ethnically European. Same for any nation.

Imagine this now, Powell would never have been given the time to explain his reasoning. Instead the interviewer would have cut in to try and make some cheap smart arse put down. I saw a video of Ted Heath and Michael Foot debating the pro’s and con’s of the then Common Market in the early 70s Each man let the other put his case across without talking over him. Neither did the presenter interfere; instead just keeping the issue being discussed on track and, possibly, not veering off topic.. How times have changed, and not for the better.

Powell was not a racist, otherwise his denouncement of the killings in Kenya in parliament in 59 cannot be understood, but as a student of history he thought immigration in such numbers would bring a new kind of civil strife to the UK in the long run, and sought to avoid it “with the lesser of two evils”. He always said the numbers were the problem not the fact that the immigrants were not white europeans (as a matter of fact he said the problem would be the same if the immigrants hailed from another european country in such proportion, albeit this doesn’t happen because other european countries share the problems of ageing populations). This is not a racist argument, Powell was a conservative who wanted the UK to remain stable and independent (the whole EU issue) for the coming decades and identified what he thought was a problem (among others) in large scale immigration of non brits (yes, germans too, only the anglosphere qualified), not the immigrants themselves. We can discuss this topic but it’s impossible to do so if you say he’s intellectually dishonest right away and dismiss what he has to say because he’s just a racist. And please note this is not about what I myself believe but about what the he himself said.

It is unconscionable how such a beautiful thinker & communicator could have been tarred & feathered for sharing an inconvenient truth.
I would claim he was the first prominent establishment figure depersoned by the liberal world order. He was in effect a casualty of modern lynching . He’s a perfect illustration of where the power truly lies. The new gatekeepers enforce this hegemony within the shadows of our parliaments ,senate, media, academia, institutions…
Over half a century has passed and his words sound more true and prescient than ever. May his memory never be erased!

I am from the UK, it is true that no one was asked if they wanted the population to be radically changed in a relatively short period of time, for example Luton is now 50% non-white which I will assume means that 50% are first, second or third generation migrants. I think that any country in the world would be concerned by such a change in demographics, just because such a change causes problems, regardless of race or any issues around that. It’s not like this just happened by accident: it was the clear result of the policies of cosmopolitanism and economic globalism. Both of these ideas have proved to be problematic, but they were never fully explained to the people anyway, the elites just assumed that it was for the best and they went ahead. It wasn’t until 2015 that people finally said, ‘hang on a minute’, don’t we get a say in all this? Of course, the easy way to shut people up is to call them some sort of ‘ism’. It’s non-stop these days.

Powell is actually referring to the consequences of an act of parliament that gives certain people rights that others do not have. Baumann, below, is half right that the intention of the 1968 Act was to prevent a wrong but it has in fact now become a right. A black or brown person can always claim that their skin colour was the reason for their failure to obtain a job. No white person can claim that even though many employers are now openly recruiting black and brown candidates only. If you think that is right you are not only a racist but an idiot

Totally overcrowded Island, over dependent on foreign food imports to sustain the still increasing population. Endless swathes of lifeless houses, super markets and roads eating up our sacred hills and meadows. Multiple conflicting ideologies, racial groups, exasperated by opportunistic politicians and media. Unemployment and slow destruction of the Middle class at the behest of big business.
And yet, this reality still hasn’t quite broken through for people.

The word racist is the reason why countries like Australia now have suburbs where over 50% of the residents are from non english speeking countries. Also traditional sayings like G’day mate, have been diversified out of our vocabulary. Australia Day also holds no meaning as we no longer have a national day thats brings the whole nation together its like one big airport with 500,000 immigrants arriving in the last year.

he didn’t play smart.
he thought the common sense of the British public would back him up and lead to a sensible solution. instead, he didn’t realize that the very institutions of Britain had been deeply saturated by elements who had been brainwashed in the universities and other institutions of learning by the Soviets and zionists to hate Britain and who delighted in its destruction from within, as such destruction gave affirmation to their personality disorders and lacks and wants.
he should have become prime minister first. as he could have done. Then made his move to make inquiries into the communist and (you know who) (kalergi plan).
no grassroots movement will work in Britain to motivate a change of policy. the people are lazy and cowardly. those who aren’t so, are arrested or shamed, or canceled. the only way change can come is by a leader playing smart from the top down

Enoch Powell says that the foreign British subjects weren’t invited into Britain. How does that fit with the need for manual labour which wasn’t being met by indigenous Brits?
I’m a white Brit born in London in the 60s to Londoner parents. It was no secret that people from the empire were coming to Britain to fill jobs that we didn’t want. Cheap labour you can call it. Those immigrants were hard working for the most part and eager to prove themselves worthy of their new home.
We can’t blame people for filling a vacuum and fulfilling essential public services. I personally believe that Britain is better for its multi culturalism. It’s clear that Dua Lipa for example, is English. Ethically she’s Albanian, but culturally she’s English as David Beckham.
Britishness comes from the land. It’s not just an idea. It’s a given for anyone born and raised in our country and nobody, regardless of colour or ethnic background should be excluded.

@nigelbenton880

The thing with Enoch Powell and the regularly referenced ‘rivers of blood’ speech is that when looked at closely it is utter nonsense – and tellingly never came to pass.
Enoch, an old school imperialist, was, as well as being anti immigration, firmly against the giving up of the British Empire.
But, here’s the thing … in that Empire were colonised people who had died for the ‘mother country’ in world wars, aspired to all things British and been handed UK passports for their service – giving them the right to live in the UK.
So, in the 50s many came to do the jobs Brits didn’t want to do and (like today) drive the buses, clean the hospitals, run the corner shops and so on.
And they assimilated … and, for the most part, it all worked – god knows, the UK even has the son of migrants as PM.
Also, when you think about it, the ‘rivers of blood’ have never happened.

@shojaejlali1290
Wasnt the original migration from commonwealth countries labour based? Werent those people actually encouraged to come because britain had surplus jobs post war? Jobs which most indigenous british people didnt want? Its the current wave of migration that bothers me….the sheer scale of it at a time when britain is a country in desperate need of solving its own problems before trying to be a nanny to the rest of tbe world. The original wave of migrants in the 60s arent the problem….which makes me wonder where enoch powell was coming from. Despite peoples claims he isnt nostradamus, maybe he had the foresight to realise that humans are tribal and with that mentality people of other races will never be able to co exist peacefully.

In any democracy it is the right of the people to decide their own destiny. Therefore where was the mandate given to parliment for the policy of ethnic engineering. The British Parliment abused the people by not giving the electorate a choice in the matter. 300 Parliamentarians decide for 55 million people that the future of the nation would be multicultural. Diversity is born from DIVISION, when did division ever produce harmony, accord or congruity, it doesn’t. As a consequence you have a society as it is today. Full of hate, mistrust, envy and dissatisfaction. All because Parlimentarians dont believe in the democratic process.

This has to be the most ironic, tone deaf, and cognitive dissonant spiel I have ever heard. How can Powell not feel the irony of complaining about people immigrating from countries colonised by Britain? They never asked to be invaded, exploited, and subjugated. Seems entirely fair to me that they should have the right to freely move to the country that went in to extract all their home countries resources for its own gain.

British subjects should not be allowed into Britain?? With this conclusion, Powell highlights the folly and absurdity of “empire”. He was, quite clearly, a racist, whose starting position was that white Britons were superior to their dark skinned subjects. Did he ever argue that the millions of white-skinned Britons who lived throughout the failing empire should be returned home? No. Instead, he doubled down on his support for the Britons living in Africa, north east Ireland, Asia and elsewhere in the world. Indeed he had absolutely no problem endorsing the rivers of blood that flowed in each of these territories, caused by the arrival of Britons and their soldiers. What an appalling man.

All the nonsensical comments supporting Powell are embarrassing. He gave his famous speech to oppose a civil rights act, not an immigration act. The Immigration situation at the time was such that you had to have a British mother (or be born in Britain before around the end of the war) to be con’s a British citizen, essentially, and had to prove it in a one chance to get the paperwork right no second chance and almost no basis for appeal system, and immigration was severely restricted otherwise. So immigration could hardly have been more restricted. He wanted discrimination to continue to be legal. He did so by sowing ethnic fear of non-white people already in Britain. He said, quoting Virgil “As I look ahead, I am filled with foreboding; like the Roman, I seem to see ‘the River Tiber foaming with much blood’.” The point of his speech seemed to be that I’d they outlaw racial discrimination, the white British population is going to be in danger.

Not quite entirely true what he stated – when he says UK didnt ask these immigrants to come. What on earth was the British Nationality Act and Windrush then? Or does he forget from 1948 – 1971 the UK urged workers to move to the UK in the posy war period. Without them we would have been in a mess. Nobody speaks of their troubles, of educated skilled workers being asked to come and promised good jobs only to end up working as labourers or other lowly paid work.
You cant blame the immigrants for settling in certain neighbourhoods if they are the only ones afforded to them, and there is no attempt at integration and “leaders” like Powell are allowed to make them feel unwelcome in national media and skew public opinion.
We created the problems we have now, yes he may have forseen them but ironically they are also his doing.
The UK has much bigger issues than a few immigrant filled ghettos , theree are plenty corners of the UK with low immigration which have higher crime and drug abuse levels and mass unemployment – I dont see many immigrants in Wales, north east, glasgow…

He just has an articulation, subtle approach and charisma over the bonnet of car that is fundamentally directing a vehicle with the sole purpose of gathering more unsuspecting members of the electorate; the driving force, rather core motivation, is a robust racist engine fueled with a deep and historical sense of superiority, the conspicuous of which is beautifully covered by the articulate catalytic converter that is Enoch Powell. That big shiney bonnet is the guise of a pressing immigration issue that affects ‘alllll of us real British, so badly too’ that we must stand united lol SMH after war, it was key for cities like London to employ cheaper labour from the commonwealth, it was a fair exchange. A socio-economic rebuild required more than that flat white British public to lift their small flattened cities back up, municipalities back, transport systems, schools, medical systems back fully. It requireddd an amalgamation of people. There’s no problem with immigration, you’re so allures by a silver tongue with good presentation, as well as a secret firm affinity with the racism at its centre, don’t belief those like yourself are totally aloof to the type of corrosive, divisive, underhand work at play here with the red herring of boarder control, a sense of nationalism of the wrong kind and pseudo-security of territory and culture. It’s an attractive manifesto proposed but no different to Mussolini or Hitlers of his lifetime. Had he proposed it 20 years prior, those were desperate times in which we can surely count on malleable minded fools like you by the bucket load to follow. Spineless, directionless assholes that allow appearances to take precedent for your ownnn selfish agenda. Not what’s best for all, for humans, politics and good politicians like Powell corale and cajole the substanceless like the mass of people and present then push and ignite those in no-man’s land, those unable to vertically evaluate for themselves so instead unjodlynattach themselves for safety to the biggest groups of which theyyy feel identified to lol for he political entities it’s just a game lol a numbers game. Bay as many idiots as possible to grab another seat/constituency 🥱 you lot are just racist lol and don’t know it. You share a deep dissatisfaction to competition with your former empire’s competition as white English people know if the playing field is equal they loose power and aren’t better than the subjects they once posed to be superior than. Chicken have come home to roost 60 years later. Bye bye silly white racist england. The genuine white English, which is an ever growing majority, see that London’d mix has been the best thing that could have happened and it’s been a step in the right direction, for the future!

There is only one race. The problem isnt skin pigmentation. The issue is mixing incompatible religions (idealoligies).

I read these comments and almost everyone is an example of tiny minded sheeple. People who are so afraid of change and so beholden to a lie. You all think you are free, yet you have been lied to, your whole lives, and you fight for your occupier.

Exchange British subject for European citizen, and it highlights the flaws in the EU experiment as well.

Well what did you think was going to happen when you invaded other countries? The British Empire was at fault here, not the immigrants.

Without immigration economies suffer. The countries that bring in the most ie USA, have stronger economies. Unless you are only focusing on people from less desirable countries in which case you are racist, make sense?

That was not a conversation? He didn’t explain why people came from the carribean. They came to rebuild the country. Yes they were British subjects. That is why they could go to England 🇬🇧 They travelled on ships. Before planes in 1962.

Honestly I actually think we should be at a level now where we see ourselves as one species.
Nobody really owns land. It’s been proven throughout history. It’s whoever wins the war at the time of conflict that occupies it.
Air travel was always going to spark immigration influxes.
Why complain when it was our white ancestors who coerced in slavery?
And why moan about citizenship and being subjects when we can’t be bothered to kick the Royals out?
Anyone know what his views
on homosexuality were by any chance?
I can imagine what they were but don’t want to jump to conclusions what with not knowing much about him yet.

I can see many who agree the argument of this man in the comment section, but I am sure if he had asked this same man that British people are also immigrants in many former British territories like Zimbabwe and Kenya and own millions of hectors of and as a consequence are those not the citizens of Zimbabwe or Kenya? I know many British people who immigrated all over the world because of British empire. This man wants to have his cake and eat it. His kind of generation want one rule for the Brits and another for anybody else.
