TRANSCRIPT

(5:10 mins)

David Faber: Let’s talk a bit about your tweets, because it comes up a lot. Even today it it came up in, you know, anticipation of this. I mean, you know, you do some tweets that seem to be, or at least give support to some who would call others conspiracy theories.

Elon Musk: Well, yes, but I mean, honestly, you know, some of these conspiracy theories have turned out to be true!

David Faber: Which ones?

Elon Musk: Well, like the the Hunter Biden laptop.

David Faber: That’s true?

Elon Musk: Yeah.

David Faber: Yeah.

Elon Musk: So, you know, that that was a pretty big deal. There was Twitter and and others engaged in active suppression of information that was relevant to the public. That’s a terrible thing that happened! That’s electoral interference.

David Faber: But how do you make a choice in terms of when you’re going to engage? I mean, for example, even today, Elon, you tweeted this thing about George Soros. I’m looking for it because I want to make sure I quote it properly. But, I mean, you know what you wrote. But you basically, …

Elon Musk: This reminds me of Magneto. This is like:

“Calm down, people. This is not, like, make up a federal case out of it!”

[bursts out laughing]

David Faber: You said:

“He wants to erode the very fabric of civilization, and Soros hates humanity.”

Like when you do something like that, …

Elon Musk: Yeah, I think that’s true. That’s my opinion.

David Faber: Okay, but why share it? Why share it especially, … Why share it when people who buy Teslas may not agree with you? Advertisers on Twitter may not agree with you? Why not just say:

“Hey, I think this.”

You can tell me. We can talk about it over there. You can tell your friends. But why share it widely?

Elon Musk: I mean, this is freedom of speech. I’m allowed to say what I want.

David Faber: You absolutely are! But I’m trying to understand why you do, because you have to know it puts you in the middle of the partisan divide in the country. It makes you a lightning rod for criticism. I mean, do you like that? People today saying he’s an anti-semite? I don’t think you are.

Elon Musk: No, I’m definitely, I’m like a pro-semite. If anything.

David Faber: [chuckling] I believe that probably is the case.

Elon Musk: Yeah.

David Faber: But why would you even introduce the idea then? That would be the case.

Elon Musk: Look, we don’t want to make this a George Soros interview.

David Faber: No! God, no! I don’t want to at all.

But what I’m trying, … It even came up, though, in the annual meeting. I mean, do your tweets hurt the company? Are there Tesla owners who say:

“I don’t agree with his political position, and I know it because he shares so much of it.”

Or are there advertisers on Twitter that Linda Yaccarino will come and say:

“You got to stop, man! I can’t get these ads because of some of the things you tweet.”

[02:35]

[Long pause as Musk ponders his response.]

[02:45]

Elon Musk: You know, I’m reminded of the scene in The Princess Bride. Great movie.

David Faber: [softly] Great movie.

Elon Musk: Where he confronts the person who killed his father. He says is:

“Offer me money! Offer me power! I don’t care!”

David Faber: So you just don’t care? You want to share what you have to say.

Elon Musk: I’ll say what I want to say, and if the consequence of that is losing money, so be it.

David Faber: Okay, …

But when you link to somebody who’s talking about the guy who killed children in a mall in Allen, Texas, and you say something like:

“It might be a bad psyop.”

I’m not quite sure what you meant. But, …

Elon Musk: In that particular case, there was a, … Somehow, not that, obviously people were killed, but it was, I think, incorrectly ascribed to be a “White supremacist action”.

And the evidence for that was some obscure Russian website that no one’s ever heard of that had no followers. And the company that found this is Bellingcat.

David Faber: Right.

Elon Musk: And, you know what Bellingcat is? Psyops!

David Faber: Right. I couldn’t really even follow exactly what it was you were trying to express there, so that’s part why I was curious.

Elon Musk: But I’m saying that I thought ascribing it to White supremacy was bullshit!

David Faber: Okay.

Elon Musk: And that the information that came from an obscure Russian website and was somehow “magically found” by Bellingcat, which is a company that does psyops!

David Faber: And there’s no proof, by the way, that he was not!

Elon Musk: I would say that there’s no proof that he is!

David Faber: And that’s a debate you want to get into on Twitter?

Elon Musk: Yes! Because we should not be ascribing things to White supremacy if it’s false!

Implicit in this line of questioning: “We should only buy products from companies whose CEOs we are 100% politically aligned with on every matter of opinion.”

@audoyn it is a form of Autism which is on the high end of the Autism spectrum, meaning that people diagnosed with it can still speak and think and understand things like the majority of everyone else, but they are usually hyper focused on any chosen topic and tend to be extremely smart people. However they are often times socially awkward, but in Elon’s case, I think he’s done a pretty good job overcoming his awkwardness.

I have a heavy background in psychology, and the one thing is an absolute, unless you’re a spiritual, ascended master and divorced all your ego. Bro, how is that something to respect? Autistic children also say what they think out loud. People with Tourette’s syndrome say what they think out loud. Saying words out loud is not an admirable quality. Literally anyone with vocal chords can do it. People who used measured speech, think before they speak, are unbiased, diplomatic, use tact, use wisdom, those are things to admire. Derping about random stuff that you don’t know about is not something you should strive for.

Watching the CNBC David Faber interview, I had an Idea about … “WHY” … Elon Musk, should say the things that he says. Freedom of speech is less about anyone in particulars’ point of view and more about the conversation that it potentially inspires. Our whole society would so much further ahead if our “Freedom of Speech” was something we embraced rather than something we feared. When David Faber asks “… why would you want to get right in the middle of a “Partisan Divide” and become a “Lightning Rod” for criticism ??? ” … it dawned on me just how ‘PROGRAMED’ our media is to keep the country divided. By putting out your views
, without fear, it creates constructive conversation that will eventually start to bridge the divide and start societal healing.

@GenericUssername

@ogzombieblunt4626 I never said that anyone’s in bed with anyone govt. Just that due to ongoing relationships his private spacex has with the Turkish govt had an impact on his decision to censor Turkish citizens on his other private company he owns. I’m not sure why you’re caught up on that specific part of the discussion when the point is that he’s actively censoring Turkish citizens during a very important election. That’s not even up to debate, my only point is that due to his ties to SpaceX and govt contracts he’s financially incentivized towards censoring the election, so people shouldn’t be surprised in his lack of consistency on the topic despite calling himself a “free speech absolutist”. You can defend him however you want, but you’re defending him while he’s censoring the most important election in recent years as it pertains to the geopolitics of the MENA region.

this was a good interview – elon is young in many ways, and still fervent about being free to say what he wants – he hasn’t come to the understanding that tact and diplomacy are very useful, – and sometimes reqiured, in public discourse – he could have said for instance “that the evidence that the shooter was a white supremacist came from a very suspicious source, so it would serve the interests of truth to have more reliable sources before assuming the person was, in fact, a white supremacist” – this would have communicated what he wanted to say more clearly, and defended himself against criticism…

Princess Bride….great movie! Yeah Elon can say what he wants as does anyone else. It may not be good for business but in retrospect much of what Elon does is not driven by money. The money is only important in achieving his goal! So now you know why he does it, and why he has so many loyal followers. The long pause to think about Montoya’s line, interesting!

There was a line in a Burt Reynold’s movie, titled “Heat”, released in 1986. His character talks crassly about an obscene amount of money – basically enough money where he doesn’t have to filter his speech. Because, let’s face it – unless you’ve got bank like Musk, EVERYONE filters their speech to someone.
So, when you’re filthy rich, you can say what you like.

Some people may complain (and that would be a valid complaint) that Elon’s opinions cost money not only to him personally but to those who invested in Tesla.
But hey, Elon does not care. Expressing his honest, uncensored opinions is important to him. I support the man in expressing his opinion whether I agree with him or not. If you are too afraid to hold Tesla shares, feel free to diversify somewhere else – that’s what I do anyway. I find myself disagreeing with Elon a lot, concerned about impact on the stock, and I have a relatively small exposure as a result I see no promlem here. Elon is the largest shareholder of Tesla, he is the Boss and what he says goes in his Kingdom whether we like it or not. And that is fair game too. We cannot make noises like petulant children and expect things go our way. Just because everybody has a voice on the Internet does not mean that everybody’s voice has an equal weight. ☮️

That news interviewer just demonstrated and pointed out the problem American society conducts it self. Bottle inside your thoughts feelings and opinions that fully represent as the true individual you are only to release all the contained frustration and anger felt over that entire time by acting mad and fed up as a significant amount of people are doing today. Something else needs to save humanity from ourselves since no earthling can.

Elon is been transparently disingenuous about not caring. If that had been the case, he would have had the courage of his conviction to freely express his opinions before Tesla’s shares went into the stratosphere. The fact that he kept his views
to himself about most political and social issues all these years when his wealth and companies weren’t secure leaves me to no other conclusion than the fact that Elon’s sudden willingness to freely share his views
is highly calculated.
I don’t even disagree with many of his views
. It’s just the false image of intellectual courage that he is attempting to cultivate that I find unappealing.

Why isnt anyone interviewing him asking him about the Roadster? The mythological car from 2017? For someone who claims that they never leave work and sleeps under their desk, there’s not a lot to show for their work. He lost the most money anyone has ever lost through acquisition of another company, bit off more than he can chew that he handed thw CEO chair to someone else, and there’s still no Roadster to show, and the losses from Twitter might even delay it’s release if it already hasn’t.

He can say what he wants. But TSLA shareholders can and should launch a shareholder lawsuit against him for destroying company value as CEO. Without his controversial takes, TSLA sales and stock value may be much higher. This is not a restriction on free speech – as CEO his stance is the company’s stance and he has a primary fiduciary responsibility to raise shareholder returns.

A high school dropout or a homeless person can speak whatever he wants. Are you saying Elon cannot speak what he thinks? If you can’t speak your thoughts freely, then you are as good as a prisoner or like you are living in British India under a colonial rule. Freedom of speech is like your ability to breathe the free air. Please don’t suffocate Elon.. let him breathe and let him speak and express himself. You don’t necessarily have to agree with his thoughts. If you like his products then buy them. It doesn’t mean that you endorse whatever he speaks.

@RM-cm8hz So much for free speech 😉 Unlike most people on this thread I am not slobbering over Elon’s every word. He trades in gossip, innuendo, and conspiracy theories. He talks and acts like someone who has serious mental problems. My company’s CEO is a well-know public figure who talks and acts like a ‘normal’ person and doesn’t court controversy. You and others are entitled to your own opinions. Musk and his antics on Twitter are not a positive thing for our society in my opinion. It may interest you to know I own a Tesla and am very happy with it, but still stand by my comments…

@Ryanstuff
All Elon has to say is that he doesn’t want to subdue what he thinks and feels simply because he is the figurehead of a brand and company. I’ll say he definitely does choose to weigh in on seemingly random/fringe news stories in which you’d think someone of his stature & company involvement would be way too busy to even catch on the news let alone research. Again I think it just comes down to the fact that he knows he’s a bit of an oddball and he’s just going with it. Kid in a candy store syndrome if that’s what you want to call it. Not necessarily drunk with power but he knows that millions are going to hear him if he’s says something. I think he’s a great example of a true description of being neurodivergent.

Well at the end of the day the intrinsic value of the companies still remain so it is still attracting value from investors over the long term. If he was creating constant volatility in the shares, people wouldn’t invest but investors obviously still have faith.

@harifederer This guy gets it. And volatility in the stock is due to investors, daytraders, algos, wall st. etc.. not Elon.
